12 Essential Oil Blends to Diffuse at Home

essential oil blend

I wrote about my favorite essential oils and their different uses before. However, this time, I want to speak how I make essential oil blends to diffuse at home for aromatherapy purposes only.

If you are not familiar with aromatherapy, it’s the use of plant materials and aromatic plant oils, including essential oils for improving psychological or physical well-being.

My interest in aromatherapy started growing bigger as I started incorporating more essential oils into my daily life. After considering for a while whether I need an essential oil diffuser in the end I decided to invest into one and I couldn’t be happier with my purchase.

Ever since I’ve been diffusing essential oils almost every day to help myself relax after a long day, concentrate on a task I need to get done or prevent mild flu or a headache. Needless to say, by now I’ve tried quite a few different essential oil blend recipes. Here’s a list of my favorite ones: essential oil blends for home

Making your own essential oil blend

I want to quickly touch on the idea of creating your own essential oil blends. From my experience, blending essential oils for the first time might be confusing. And to be frank, I don’t have the right knowledge I could confidently share with others. However, there are a few things I found helpful when trying to make my own essential oil blend.

All essential oils are grouped together based on their aromas, and these groups are called categories. Knowing which essential oil belongs to which category can help you, later on, create blends that are well balanced.

Essential Oil Categories

  • Citrus – Orange, Bergamot, Lemon, Lime
  • Earthy – Valerian, Oakmoss, Vetiver, Patchouli
  • Floral – Lavender, Neroli, Jasmine, Chamomile
  • Herby – Marjoram, Clary Sage, Basil, Melissa
  • Medicinal – Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Capjut, Tea Tree
  • Minty – Peppermint, Spearmint, Catnip (mildly)
  • Spicy – Nutmeg, Clove, Cinnamon, Cardamom
  • Woodsy – Pine, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Wintergreen

Once you are familiar with essential oil categories, and different healing properties these essential oils have, you can start combining them together. And just before you ask how do you know which scents go together, take a look at the list of possible essential oil category combinations.

Possible Category Combinations (source)

  • Floral blends with floral, woodsy, spicy, and citrus
  • Woodsy blends with woodsy, floral, earthy, herby, minty, medicinal, spicy, and citrus
  • Earthy blends with earthy, woodsy, and minty
  • Herbaceous blends with herby, woodsy, and minty
  • Minty blends with minty, woodsy, earthy, herby, and citrus
  • Medicinal blends with medicinal and woodsy
  • Spicy blends with spicy, floral, woodsy, and citrus
  • Citrus blends with citrus, floral, woodsy, minty, and spicy

When it comes to essential oil blends, it’s fairly easy to change the intensity of the smells depending on your mood. For example one day you might want lavender to be a dominant note in your blend, and the other time you want the more uplifting smell to overtake the calming lavender. It’s all up to you.

Essential oils blends for diffusers usually contain 8 to 12 drops but you can add more or less, depending on the size of your diffuser and personal preference. Once again, it’s all up to you.

I’ve mentioned before that essential oils are very interconnected to sensory perception. That’s why whenever you are thinking about purchasing new essential oil, pay a visit to a store and smell it beforehand. Dwell on how well this particular essential oil makes you feel, especially if you are looking for oil for aromatherapy purposes.

By the way, just to clear things up, I’m not a trained professional when it comes to aromatherapy. These are the essential oil blend recipes I stumbled upon on the world wide web, tried and enjoyed incorporating into my life.
