Market Your Business for Free: Linking

Linking is an internet Marketing technique that is related to search engine optimization. It is one of the most important ways you can market your business when marketing in the Search Engines. As an internet marketing technique though, it is very effective in its own right, and you should consider making it an important part of your marketing plan.

Most people who use this technique to market do it wrong. The reason is that most people who use it, especially those who use blog comment blasters and tools like that, blast their fake comments out to thousands of sites without bothering to see where these comments are going. (I know this because I used to get those comments until I figured out a way to block them.)

If you want to get the most from your linking efforts, you’ll want to learn how to do it right. (Having one link from a top quality site will carry more weight than hundreds or thousands from low quality unrelated sites.) Of course, the most effective way to do this is to start an affiliate program. Since most affiliates won’t cloak their links, you’ll have tons of links pointing back to your website. This is how Corey Rudl once made his website Marketing Tips rank so well in the search engines for the term internet marketing.

However, if you don’t own your own products, or you’re not interested in creating your own products, or, if you’re an author who puts your products on Amazon and can’t build backlinks, then this is probably not a practical solution for you. You’ll need to come up with other ways to promote.

Before I mentioned blog comments, which is only one way of building backlinks. The key, or secret here, is to find blogs that are “do follow,” post thoughtful comments, and keep doing this to build up links. Although this will take awhile, it’s worth it because not only do these links help you rank better in the search engines, but other people will read them if they’re well written.

Submitting to directories is another way to build backlinks. Mix it up by submitting to general directories, as well as topical directories. Search engines are also a form of directory so make sure you submit your content there.

One of the most important things I want to stress here is that search engines don’t buy anything. People do. Tailor your marketing efforts towards those who will buy your products. You want to build a relationship, and spamming people with useless comments or useless email won’t make the sale. Yes, there are those who are new to the internet who will fall for this. Unfortunately, they’ll end up getting ripped off before they learn, but for the most part, this type of marketing doesn’t work, so don’t do it.

What’s most important to remember here is that you want to link to sites that are relevant to yours. For example, if you own a health site, don’t waste your time building backlinks from internet marketing sites. You’re wasting your time. Although general sites, like article directories are good, or social media sites, like Facebook, if the site is related to a specific topic, stick to the topic.
