Gay unAfrican?

This is a very touchy topic and even though the Western culture is growing to accept it and taking steps towards equality. Africa on the other hand is still a million steps behind and I think this has to do with Religion and Tradition. Many Africans believe that homosexuality is unAfrican and some go as far as hating homosexual people or see them as "disgusting". The President of Zimbabwe - Robert Mugabe stated that homosexuals were "worse than pigs and dogs". Shocking but true.

South Africa seems to be one of the only countries in Africa that are becoming more accepting of homosexuals and they have rights unlike the rest of the countries. This might be because South Africa is becoming very modern and indulging in the Western culture. There are also celebrities like the late Brenda Fassie who came out in the public eye.

I find that Afropolitans (modern Africans) are more open and accepting of people whereas the generations before are still stuck in a very stubborn mindset where it may be okay for other cultures to come out of the closets but not for Africans. This of-course makes it hard for Africans to come out and be honest about who they are. I personally have never met any homosexual Africans and I wonder if there are any people out there who are or know any African friends or family who are homosexual. I would love to here your experiences about dealing with this African view on homosexuality.
