Bringing beach colours home – Shop the Kenya coast 2

When I visit the Beach in Kenya, I get a little overexcited about taking some of those Indian Ocean coastal colours home and am on a mission to collect fabrics. Usually I am drawn to clothes made from the ubiquitous Kenyan kikoy (see image below) but this time I found some great Indian fabrics in a shop in town. For me, it’s all about finding something different, then rocking it while we are down there. Beach wear in Kenya is all about super thin cover ups in the prettiest fabrics. When I get home, the loot normally gets stashed in a drawer until my next beach visit but occasionally I’ll break something out when it gets really hot in Nairobi (usually around February time).

The good news is that beach shopping in Kenya is not too hard on the pocket, though it helps to drive a hard bargain. Everything in these photos was picked up for between 1,000-2,500 Kenya shillings per piece. I’m not good at lying on sunbeds, so love to sniff out a bargain either in town or from beach vendors. I normally foist a whole lot of my beach purchases onto the kids (which they accept with varying degrees of enthusiasm) but this time I did pretty well for myself with the beach dress(es) I bought pictured below. It’s shortish, but not too short, with a 3/4 length sleeve and a pretty pleated scoop neckline. To belt or not to belt? That is the question.

Hope I’ve inspired you! Clothing sourced at:  Shakir Watamu (many thanks for the long suffering patience of the shop staff!).
