The Self Improvement Blog | Self Esteem | Self Confidence

When it comes to aging, you can either feel like your age or treat it as just a number. Many choose to live out their golden years with goals filled with adventure and fun but others, unfortunately, take less interest in activities and their overall well-being. Staying Healthy is important regardless of your age. As you grow older and peak over 65, however, you’ll find that your drive to be physically active declines. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the ways you can remain healthy and active over 65.

Build the Garden of Your Dreams

Gardening is one of the best activities to take on. You are always learning something new, you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor, and it is a great way to combat depression. Touching the earth and grounding oneself has been proven to help alleviate inflammation, improve cognitive function and boost one’s mood.

With gardening, you can join many groups, organizations and spend time with Family. After all, who wouldn’t want to help their grandkids pick out a freshly grown pumpkin or make a beautiful flower arrangement from your own personal garden? The best part of all is you will always have something new to share with friends and family around the dinner table.

Exercise With Friends or in a Social Group

Exercise helps keep an aging body in shape, boost one’s emotional health, and helps you stay social. Working out with a friend or going to a swim meet at the nearby fitness center are great choices. One doesn’t have to feel 65 or older just because they are 65 or older.

If swimming isn’t your cup of tea, you can always try bike riding, hiking, yoga, golfing, bowling, mixed martial arts, and more. There is always a fitness opportunity you can try regardless of your age.

If going out is not something you like to do often, you can always catch up on what the kids are doing and have fun with your grandchildren. Maybe try your hand with a Wii and all of the fun video games that come with it.

Take on a Part-time Career or Monetize Your Hobby

Do you have a passion for woodworking? Have you always knitted and now don’t know what to do with all those sweaters, hats, blankets, and socks? Do you have a passion to create? Have you always wanted to try a new career or do something you never thought you could do when you were younger?

There are plenty of opportunities to find a part-time career or monetize your favorite hobby. If you are willing to put in a little work to learn how to use the computer, you can even start your own online business! You can finally sell all the things you’ve created or attend a local craft show to see all the fun trinkets others have created.

Do Some Volunteer Work in Your Area

Helping out the needy can definitely help combat any loneliness or the need to do something. There are plenty of opportunities to help out around your community. You can try your hand at a local soup kitchen, help out the homeless at the local homeless shelter, help out a local church, become a mentor for children, and more.

If people aren’t your favorite things to deal with you can always volunteer at the local animal shelter. A dog or cat will always appreciate your love and compassion.

Learn a New Skill or Hobby

Nothing help defeat the fear of growing old like learning something new. There are over thousands of hobbies and skills to choose from. Take on a quilting challenge, try your hand at photography, maybe invest in some video games, or build an entire fleet of model aircraft.

There are many places that offer discounts to seniors who want to learn how to cook, speak a foreign language, learn how to use a computer, and more. You can even try your hand at college and get a degree in something you actually want to learn; there are scholarships for seniors to help even out the costs.

Eat Healthy Foods and Maintain a Balanced Diet

Even twenty-year-olds can feel old on a bad diet. Make sure you are giving your body the love it deserves by eating well and meeting your bodies dietary needs.
