The head and Heart conflict a lot. You see it in relationships and you see it in your professional life. In our heads lives the ego as well as a higher state of consciousness. We have energy systems in the body that work together. Sometimes these energy centers are not so harmonious. It takes some work to get them to function in the way that makes us feel good. Our heart center, or Chakra, is the energy we feel the most. When our ego sends us constant messages through inner dialogue, we can shut our heart down to protect ourselves. This is the conflict that stops us from living in total truth and not in fear. This is how meditation can help.
Mindfulness Meditation and the Observation of Ego
It’s important to understand that we are responsible for the issues of the ego. We gave our mind a job to do long ago. When we were kids in fact. As every one of us has done, we asked the mind to protect us from danger. Now that there is very little danger in life, we have morphed what we perceive as danger. It’s no longer about being chased by a predator or dying of starvation in the West, it’s about not feeling a sense of belonging, not being loved, or getting fired from your job and losing your house.
Within the mind, we have the ego. If you say hello to yourself right now internally, you will hear yourself thinking hello. There is the ego and there is your higher state of consciousness. It is the witness of the ego and it is what dominates when you meditate. When you learn to master your mind, that is essentially what you are doing. You are allowing the true and wise part of you to witness what the mind is ruminating about. Instead of buying into the stories that it’s telling you, you just look into it. Once you grasp this concept, you can quickly and easily quiet the mind. It isn’t resistance either. Once you realize your thinking is making your heart hurt or causing you stress, it just stops.
Seven Chakra Meditation
It’s important to note that all seven chakras should be worked on during a meditation as they are all interconnected. In particular, if you are going to work on any chakras, you should always start with the root chakra because it grounds you. This in a way protects you if there is any energy that needs to become unblocked. It prevents you from getting overly emotional and afraid of those emotions should they arise during an energy activation.
The Chakras sit in the middle of your body in different locations and include:
First Chakra – The Root Chakra which sits in the area of your tailbone.
Second Chakra – The Sacral Chakra which sits above the pelvis in the middle of your body.
Third Chakra – The Solar Plexus Chaka which sits above your navel.
Fourth Chakra – The Heart Chakra which sits at your chest. It is the middle of chakra centers.
Fifth Chakra – The Throat Chakra which sits near where an Adam’s apple would be.
Sixth Chakra – The Third Eye Chakra which sits in between your eyes just above the brow line.
Seventh Chakra – The Crown Chakra which sits on top of your head.
As you go through these chakras, you will eventually get to the heart which is what this article is focusing on. As you will have meditated for at least 10 minutes to get to your heart chakra, you should be quite centered. You may, through enough practice, even feel the heart. Really feel it’s energy. When you’ve been hurt or feel afraid, the heart chakra shuts down. You can feel it. It feels like pain. The chest tightens up. As you envision yourself breathing love and light into the heart space, you allow yourself to open up that energy. You can open your heart despite the fear or hurt that shut it down.
Letting Go Through Meditation
Thoughts are merely an object. We decide what we let go of and what we hold onto. Through our lives, we have experienced pain and disappointment. Some of those things we never let go of. In matters of the heart, this can be quite amplified. If you had a partner who cheated on you, your mind may start to create stories when your husband of twenty years is a few minutes late from work. These triggers can really hurt and cause your heart to shut down. You never got over the pain.
When you meditate and focus on how you’re feeling, you can tap into the heart center where all these little bits of painful past live. Through enough practice, you can walk through that pain by tapping into the energy of your heart. You can even learn to touch the pain. Something from your childhood can be making you anxious and afraid today. Meditation can help you take that thorn which lives in your heart and be rid of it forever. You can call it an epiphany if you want but what you’re doing is acknowledging past heartache and letting it go. This can be done through meditation.
The profound positive effects you can get from meditation include managing the mind and letting go of what no longer serves you. Past pain and fear cause the brain to go into fight/flight response and the first thing to shut down is your heart. You don’t have the space to feel love and react to something in a compassionate way. Meditation is the way out from this common human affliction.
