Believe it or not, a specific facial expression can improve your productivity. Smiling, whether it’s initially genuine or you’re faking it until you make it, can solve a wealth of issues or obstacles in your personal and professional life. We could all probably benefit from smiling a little more – especially when it comes to achieving our goals. Here are seven reasons why smiling increases your productivity.
1. Smiling Makes You Happy
Most of the time you Smile, you’re doing it because you’re happy. Believe it or not, the reverse is also true. Smiling, and the chemical and emotional triggers that come with it, are always connected. By reminding yourself to smile more, you’ll actually improve your mood. When you’re feeling less morose, it’s a lot easier to accomplish whatever it is you’ve set out to do.
2. Improved Relationships With Coworkers
Teamwork is a vital element of productivity. You need to be able to effectively work together to complete a project. Inevitably, differences of opinions and varying work styles make for deadlocked group work situations. By smiling, you’ll come across as more agreeable, less hostile, and less defensive. It’s easier to come to compromises by smiling.
3. Increased Confidence
Some people don’t smile because they don’t like the way their teeth look. If you’re one of those people, you might want to switch to a whitening toothpaste or get a mouth guard for bruxism. Smiling will make you appear more confident, and perhaps even feel more confident based on the feedback you’re getting. When you’re pitching an idea to your boss or pitching your business to an investor, your smile shows your confidence.
4. Reduced Susceptibility to Burnout
The endorphins triggered by smiling have been known to reduce stress, producing a calming effect. To a certain extent, these endorphins also act to naturally minimize pain. When things are getting too tough for you to focus on the task at hand, find a few reasons to smile. You’ll feel less overwhelmed and a little more relieved just by curling up the corners of your mouth.
5. Better Conflict Resolution Skills
Who would you trust to provide a valuable solution to a problem: someone who is smiling, or someone who looks angry? Keeping calm and appearing friendly is necessary for working out a tough situation. You’ll want that smile on your face in customer service situations, or whenever you’re dealing with someone who may be dramatically dissatisfied with a situation. You’ll be productive even when a situation feels impossible.
6. Smiling Builds Trust
Sometimes, you need people’s trust to advance a project, plan, or idea. If people see anything other than confidence and happiness in you while you’re conveying your idea, they may be less likely to trust you. After all, would you trust someone if it seems as though they’re doubting themselves? Smiling shows that you’re sure about the things you’re saying, helping you come across as believable and trustworthy.
7. Happiness Makes You Healthier
As unbelievable as it may seem, happiness boosts your immune system. The chemicals your body naturally creates when it’s happy pump your system full of everything you need to feel great. If you’re presenting yourself as grumpy all the time, your immune system may be lower. No one is productive when they’re sick. Sometimes, a little vitamin C and a smile can help you fight off a cold.
Although it can be a little annoying, those people constantly nagging you to smile more might be onto something. If you’re trying to conquer the world, a smile is the most important free tool you have at your disposal.
