I was working on some personal development today, and the speaker kept using the word, “Autonomy.” The only other time I have ever heard this word Autonomy, was in my world history class in college. I had always associated this word with government. To have an autonomous government is to be self-inclusive, independent from outside influence or rule. But after hearing him use the word about four or five times, I started to think I might not be grasping the full meaning of this word. I thought to myself, “Why should I be associating this word to the way I should live my life?” Like anyone else I turned to Google for the definition.
Webster’s definition of “Autonomy.”
: The state of existing or acting separately from others.
: The power or right of country, group, etc., to govern itself.
: The quality or state of being self-governing; especially the right of self-government.
: Self-directing freedom and especially moral independence.
: A self-governing state.
Turns out my understanding of the word was spot on, however I never thought to associate the Word Autonomy with a way of living my life. Every day we are told how we should live our lives. Whether it be from TV, radio, friends, loved ones, co-workers, the list goes on. We have become so dependent on what we hear from everyone else but our selves. We seem to have a hard time canceling out all the noise. We need to take the time to listen to our inner selves. Our own thoughts, beliefs, dreams, spirit, who we are at the core of our being is calling out to us. It is asking us to cast aside all the bull shit and do what makes us happy. All we need to do is get away from the noise.
Find a quiet place where no one or nothing can bother you, and listen to yourself. If we start believing in ourselves, and stop listening to what the rest of the world tells us to do, then we can live a life of autonomy.
So block in some time for you to be alone with your thoughts. Make a list of all the things you would rather be doing. Take all the ideas that could potentially earn you a living, no matter how crazy it may seem. Take action on those ideas. You owe it to yourself to at least see where the road leads. Creating a life for yourself independent of others influence is the quickest way to begin living a more meaningful and fulfilled life. Start living a life of autonomy!
As always, once you have figured things out then help someone else figure things out.
