Find A Tutor For Your New Year’s Resolution

The Self Improvement Blog

So you’ve decided your new year’s Resolution is to learn a new language, or to pick up the violin again, or to get really good at public speaking. You are going to better yourself in some way. Perhaps you need to find a  tutor to keep these resolutions. Here’s why.

All of our resolutions are made with the best intentions; “I want to improve myself”, “I have always wanted to be more creative” or “I want to learn something new.” But now you are a few weeks into January, how do you take the next step and actually make this resolution happen?

Statistics show that 12.8% of new year’s resolutions for 2017 were about self-improvement. So you are not alone in wanting this. But sadly, most people will give up on their resolution even before January is through.

But you are different. You really do want to learn Spanish. You really do want to sing with more confidence. You really do want to have proper one-to-one yoga lessons.

Trying to go it alone, and self-teach these new skills is extremely difficult, nigh on impossible in some cases. But there is hope. One of the best ways to learn a new Skill (and to stick at it) is to have a tutor; a mentor or teacher who can enthusiastically introduce you to their subject and help you stick at it when you lose momentum (which you will do at some point).

You can search for local tutors through online searches or on your local community notice boards. If you’re struggling to find one, you could even put up a ‘wanted’ post saying you are looking for a tutor.

It’s also a good idea to research your chosen subject a bit more before committing to paying for a tutor. You could head to your local library to learn more about your chosen subject, or read through online articles to give you a better understanding of what it will be like to master your new skill.

If you want to learn a new language, but you’re not sure which one, try watching films in the language, or listening to music. Consider why you want to learn that language too – is it to travel to other countries and be able to have a conversation, or do you want to improve your language skills for your business prospects?

If it’s a new instrument you would like to learn, why not head to some concerts or gigs to immerse yourself in the sound of the instrument? You may think that you want to learn the clarinet, but is that classical clarinet or jazz? If you know the genre of music you are interested in, then you can find the right teacher to match.

After doing your own initial research, you can then start your search to find someone local to you who can share their enthusiasm and expertise in that subject. No matter what your budget or location (you can even find tutors who teach over Skype) you will be able to find someone who can help you with your new interest.

Working out what you want, and why the new skill will improve your life will help any tutor design the best lessons for you. A good tutor will also help you to set goals and with design a tuition structure with you that will be the most affective and fun.

So stand out from the crowd this 2017, and make your self-improvement resolution one that you stick with. Find a supportive and enthusiastic tutor, and get started.
