Joss Stone – Super Duper Love (Are You Diggin’ On Me) (Festival Performance)

Peak UK Chart Position: #18 in May 2004.

Joscelyn Eve Stoker, born in Dover, Kent, and better known as Joss Stone, celebrates her 30th birthday today. Influenced by the likes of Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield, Stone got into music at an early age, and at 13 auditioned for (and ultimately won) the Jane McDonald-hosted BBC talent show Star For A Night. Two years later saw the release of million-selling debut album “The Soul Sessions”, with both “Fell In Love With A Boy” and “Super Duper Love” from it getting to number 18 on the singles chart.

Her follow-up album “Mind, Body & Soul” in September 2004 entered the charts at number one, making her the youngest female solo artist to do so. It also gave Stone her biggest singles success, when “You Had Me” got to number nine. The following year, she won two BRIT Awards, one for best British Female Solo Artist, and one (curiously) for best British Urban Act. More recently, 2011 saw her record an album as part of super-group SuperHeavy, which also included Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Damian Marley, and Indian producer and musician A R Rahman. Her last album, in 2015, entitled “Water For Your Soul”, was more reggae-influenced, and thus topped the reggae charts on release.

“Super Duper Love”, as with the rest of the tracks on “The Soul Sessions” was a cover – originally by Willie “Sugar Billy” Garner in 1975. Here, it is performed at last year’s Pori Jazz festival, in Pori, Finland. The uploader has done a fantastic job to film this as well as they have, as Stone (during the song) leaves the stage, and ends up amongst the crowd. A truly excellent performance.
