Prince and the New Power Generation – Money Don’t Matter 2 Night (Music Video)

Peak UK Chart Position: #19 in March 1992.

The Fourth single from 1991 album “Diamonds And Pearls” (his first to feature the backing band New Power Generation) was the UK top forty’s highest climber on this day in 1992, up from 31 to 19. “Money Don’t Matter 2 Night” was co-written with Rosie Gaines, who was also a backing vocalist and keyboardist (as part of the NPG) for Prince, and found solo success in 1997 with the track “Closer Than Close”.

Perhaps due to being the fourth single from the album (after “Gett Off”, “Cream”, and title track “Diamonds And Pearls”), it fared moderately chart-wise, performing best in the Netherlands where it reached number seven, but only managing a twenty-something position in most countries. It would still be two more years until Prince secured his only UK number one in “The Most Beautiful Girl In The World”.

The song’s promotional video, featured here, was directed by Spike Lee, and centres around a poverty-stricken African-American family – with no shots of Prince; it was considered overly political and not “MTV friendly”. A second version was issued, which included footage of the song performed by Prince and the New Power Generation.
