Human League – One Man In My Heart (TOTP)

Peak UK Chart Position: #13 in March 1995.

Happy birthday to the Human League singer Susan Sulley, who turns 54 today. She joined the group in 1980 together with friend Joanne Catherall after – so the story goes – Phil Oakey found the 17-year-old Sulley and 18-year-old Catherall dancing around their handbags in a local nightclub, just days before a tour the Human League were obliged to undertake. The group have been effectively a trio since 1994, although other musicians have been utilised. Their biggest hit remains 1981’s “Don’t You Want Me”, the 28th best selling single of all time, with a figure just shy of 1.6 million copies sold.

“One Man In My Heart” was the follow-up to “Tell Me When”, which was their first top ten single in nearly nine years, and features Sulley as the main vocalist. She still lives in her native Sheffield, and continues to record, perform and tour full-time with The Human League.

Victoria Beckham of The Spice Girls has stated that it was Sulley that inspired her to enter pop music.

Here is their Top of the Pops performance – complete with retro microphones – from March 16th 1995, a Lenny Henry-hosted show. The song was at its peak position of thirteen this week in 1995.
