Neneh Cherry – Manchild (TOTP)

Peak UK Chart Position: #5 in May 1989.

A busy day for birthdays, as Neneh Mariann Karlsson, better known as Neneh Cherry, celebrates her 53rd birthday. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, she moved to the UK aged 14, and soon after began getting heavily involved in music. It wasn’t until 1988 though that “Buffalo Stance” kicked off her success, it getting to number three in the charts and prompting an appearance on Top of the Pops whilst seven months pregnant. The debut album “Raw Like Sushi”, which got to number two and spawned four singles, had major assistance in the writing and production from eventual husband Cameron McVey.

She managed a chart-topping single in 1995, along with Cher, Chrissie Hynde, and Eric Clapton, with their Comic Relief fundraiser “Love Can Build A Bridge”. The year before saw her have a global smash duetting with Youssou N’Dour on “7 Seconds”, a song that got to number one in Italy for nine weeks, and France for sixteen weeks.

“Manchild” was performed on Top of the Pops twice; this being the first, from May 18th 1989.
