Adam Ant – Room At The Top (TOTP)

Peak UK Chart Position: #13 in March 1990.

Adam Ant – born Stuart Leslie Goddard, in Marylebone, London, England – gained popularity as the lead singer of post-punk group Adam and the Ants and later as a solo artist, scoring 10 UK top ten hits from 1980 to 1983, including three UK Number one singles. He has also worked as an actor, appearing in over two dozen films and television episodes from 1985 to 2003. Since 2010, Ant has undertaken an intensive reactivation of his musical career, performing live regularly in his hometown of London and beyond, recording and releasing a new album and completing three full-length UK national tours, two US national tours, and an Australian tour.

Quick facts:

  • “Room At The Top” came from Ant’s fourth solo album “Manners & Physique”, and was his first UK hit since “Apollo 9” also got to number 13 in 1984.
  • It entered the UK charts at number 38 on this day in 1990, peaking at 13 two weeks later.
  • “Goody Two Shoes” was his only solo number one, topping the chart in 1982 and ending up the 17th best-seller of the year.
  • “Stand And Deliver” and “Prince Charming” were number ones for Adam and the Ants in 1981, second and third best-sellers of the year respectively.

Here is “Room At The Top”, taken from a Mark Goodier-hosted “Top of the Pops” on February 22nd 1990 – a show that also featured Tina Turner, Beats International, Guru Josh, and Sinead O’Connor at number one.
