Shakira – Whenever, Wherever (Glastonbury 2011)

Peak UK Chart Position: #2 in March 2002.

On what would have been Eva Cassidy’s birthday (born 1963, died November 2nd 1996), here are a selection of celebrants for February 2nd:

  • Howard Bellamy – born Homer Howard Bellamy, from Darby, Florida, United States – singer/songwriter/musician, turns 71 today (as half of the Bellamy Brothers: “If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me” UK #3 in 1979, “Let Your Love Flow” UK #7/US #1 in 1976)
  • Graham Nash – born Graham William Nash, in Blackpool, Lancashire, England – musician/singer/songwriter/activist, turns 75 today (with The Hollies: “I’m Alive” UK #1 in 1965, “Just One Look” UK #2 in 1964, “I Can’t Let Go” UK #2 in 1966; as part of Crosby, Stills & Nash: “Marrakesh Express” UK #17 in 1969)

Lastly, happy birthday to Shakira – born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, in Barranquilla, Atlántico, Colombia – who is 40 today. She found global success in 2001 after entering the English-language market with her fifth album “Laundry Service”, which yielded “Whenever, Wherever” as its lead track – a number one single in all but a very few countries. She eventually scored a UK number one with “Hips Don’t Lie” in 2006 (also her first American chart-topper), featuring Wyclef Jean. She also topped the charts here with Beyoncé on “Beautiful Liar”. 2016 saw her working on her eleventh studio album, with a single entitled “Chantaje” released last October.

Here is that global smash that made her a familiar face everywhere – “Whenever, Wherever”, as performed at Glastonbury in 2011. It has, to date, sold over ten million copies worldwide.
