Roachford – Only To Be With You (TOTP)

Peak UK Chart Position: #21 in April 1994.

January 22nd in years gone by saw the births of Sam Cooke (born 1931, died December 11th 1964), Malcolm McLaren (born 1946, died April 8th 2010), and Michael Hutchence (born 1960, died November 22nd 1997). It also sees the birthdays of the following:

  • Steven Adler – born Michael Coletti, in Cleveland, Ohio, United States – musician/songwriter, turns 52 today (as drummer with Guns N’ Roses: “Paradise City” UK #6/US #5, “Sweet Child O’ Mine” UK #6/US #1, both 1989)
  • DJ Jazzy Jeff – born Jeffrey Allen Townes, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States – record producer/DJ/turntablist/actor, is 52 today (as one half of DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince: “Boom! Shake The Room” UK #1 in 1993, “Summertime” UK #8/US #4 in 1991)
  • Ben Moody – born Benjamin Robert Moody, in Little Rock, Arkansas, United States – musician/singer/songwriter/producer/actor, turns 36 today (as founder/lead guitarist with Evanescence: “Bring Me To Life” UK #1/US #5, “Going Under” UK #8 in 2003)
  • Steve Perry – born Stephen Ray Perry, Hanford, California, United States – singer/songwriter/record producer, is 68 today (“Oh Sherrie” UK #89/US #3 in 1984; as lead singer of Journey: “Don’t Stop Believin'” UK #6 in 2010, also US #9)

Finally, happy birthday to Andrew Roachford – born in London, England – who is also 52 today. He was lead singer of the eponymous group Roachford, as well as playing keyboard and percussion, who gained recognition as support on tour for the likes of Terence Trent D’Arby and The Christians. “Cuddly Toy”, their biggest hit, was first released in summer 1988, and missed the charts – but made number four on re-release early the following year.

He still records music and performs, as a solo artist as well as vocalist in recent times for Mike and the Mechanics. He toured once again with The Christians in 2015. Here, back on April 7th 1994, Roachford made their second appearance on Top of the Pops with “Only To Be With You”, having – unusually – appeared three weeks earlier whilst at number 41.
