Johnny Hates Jazz – Turn Back The Clock (TOTP)

Christmas Compendium Track 45:

Peak UK Chart Position: #12 in January 1988.
Christmas Chart Position: #15.

Not really a Christmas song as such, but it managed to be featured on the 1987 Christmas Top of the Pops despite being a non-mover at number 15. Their third of four top forty hits in the UK, with debut and number five hit “Shattered Dreams” being the biggest and starting it all for them earlier in the year. Vocalist, guitarist, and keyboard player Clark Datchler and bassist Mike Nocito are the two original members who still record and perform under the name.

Quick facts:

  • “Turn Back The Clock” featured Kim Wilde on backing vocals, who spent Christmas at number three with Mel Smith on “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree”
  • The band’s two other chart hits were “I Don’t Want To Be A Hero” (#11) and “Heart Of Gold” (#19).
  • Nocito was the producer of 1997 Eurovision Song Contest winner “Love Shine A Light” by Katrina and the Waves.

Unfortunately, the aforementioned performance isn’t on YouTube; instead, it’s this one from December 10th.
