Go West – King Of Wishful Thinking (TOTP)

Peak UK Chart Position: #18 in August 1990.

Celebrating their birthday today are the following:

  • Sarah Harding, ex-Girls Aloud (four UK number ones, including “Sound Of The Underground” and “The Promise”) is 35 today.
  • Ronnie DeVoe, ex-New Edition (“Candy Girl”, UK #1 in 1983) and Bell Biv DeVoe (“Poison”, UK #19/US #3 in 1990) turns 49 today.
  • RuPaul, American actor and drag queen (“It’s Raining Men… The Sequel” with Martha Wash UK #21 in 1998, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” with Elton John UK #7 in 1994) is 56 today.
  • Clarke Isaac Hanson, the eldest of the Hanson trio (“MmmBop” UK #1, “Where’s The Love” UK #4 both in 1997) is 36 today.

Plus, Go West lead singer and occasional solo artist Peter Cox turns 61. He started out in the school choir, became chorister at The Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace, and formed Go West in 1982. It took them some time to get a record deal, hence their debut single “We Close Our Eyes” didn’t land until early 1985. It got to number five and remains their biggest hit.

They scored seven top twenty hits in total, with “King Of Wishful Thinking” (from the movie ‘Pretty Woman’) being one of them – peaking at number 18 in the UK, and becoming their only top ten success stateside, reaching number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. This Top of the Pops performance was from August 16th 1990, and has an excellent live vocal performance from Cox – who still tours with Richard Drummie as Go West, and still sounds fantastic.
