I Really Like To Eat……I’m Embracing It

I Really Like To Eat……Embracing It

I struggle with this…..flavor, enjoyment, palatable pleasures.  I really like to eat and I’m, for the time being, Embracing it.

Really, I eat most anything.  Put it in front of me and I’ll eat it.  Roasted cricket comes to mind first off and then there was that afternoon in Chetamul….I didn’t speak enough Espanol and they, the whole staff at the restaurant, well they didn’t speak English at all!  I just ate what they put in front of me…..it was a free-for-all! No, the Food wasn’t free, it was just an avalanche of food that was on the table.  Memo to self….I must go back to that place.

I’ve tried my darndest to eat new and unique foods.  In the tourist areas that’s not the easiest thing to do as the food is menued to be palatable to the visitors.

Here’s an example of something I ate, I don’t know what it was, except to tell you that it was WONDERFUL!!!  I ate it ALL!!  Actually, I would have ordered some more but I didn’t know what it was and the server wasn’t available before the last bite.

Such is life……

When two of our grandkids (Keira and Max) came for a summer visit, we ate at Mateos (that’s where and when the iguana bit me) where the Earth’s Best Fish Tacos are served……but instead I fancied the ‘pulpo’ (octopus) that particular day.  I had a small taste of grilled octopus several months before and honestly……it was good.  Surprisingly.  What Max and Keira were waiting for was for me to cut into the head and eat it.  But, I was full from the tentacles and figured I save the main body for another day.  I’ll return for the fish tacos.

There’s lots of American fare here…….my latest favorite stop is Guy Fieri’s   But, that’s just an American food treat.  But, actually, I can get American food at most any restaurant except for the small mom and pop ones that serve authentic Mexican cuisine.  And why would I possible opt for American food??

Besides, I like different.  And different is eating local cuisine.  So, I try daily to find a small family business in the city or a pueblo to test my taste buds on what makes life good here.  Some places owner operated startups attract me and I’ve really been pleasantly surprised.   This place is a short walk from where I’m staying.  I’ve been there twice.  The first time they didn’t have their licenses in order and no cervaza from the Cervecaria!  So I passed on the first trip, but the second trip involved the consumption of cervaza, mezcal, and some unique food.

Get this…..I don’t recall the name of this but…..it’s cheese cooked on the grill until it’s lightly browned (sort of like a pancake but it’s thin), then it’s topped with whatever filling you requested and then it’s rolled and served like this on top of corn tortillas!  Excellent!

I think that when you travel abroad, you shouldn’t be looking for ‘cheeseburgers’!  There’s more to paradise’s enchanting cuisines.

This was breakfast at a mom & pop a bit off the touris path…..GREAT FOOD!  No English was spoken here so there was a lot of pointing at the menu.

A stop a Senor Frog’s is a must!   Ha!!  My belly is full just posting the pictures!  There’s one right next to the Ferry dock in Playa del Carmen (where these pictures are taken) and another on Isla de Cozumel.  Other than GREAT food, these places are also entertaining.  And now, it’s back to doing this stuff.  Right after a brief Siesta!!

I love my Siestas!

Peace, love, and beaches,

John
