Lifestyle Review: Making Zombie Pancakes with Zombieland: Double Tap

Happy Pancake Day! To celebrate the release of Zombieland: Double Tap with my friends at Sony Home Entertainment, I thought I'd have a go at making some special gorey, zombie themed pancakes.

Besides Halloween, Pancake Day as long been one of my most favourite 'holidays' to celebrate. I have such a great sense of nostalgia from pancake day; eating them for dinner felt like such a treat. Since then, they've become a firm family in our house and I just love playing around with recipes and trying out new flavours, as you may have seen from my pumpkin spice pancake recipe in the Autumn.

So when Sony got in touch and asked if I would be interested in trying to create some special zombie pancakes for their release of Zombieland: Double Tap on Blu-Ray and DVD*, I had mixed feelings of terror and excitement. I tried my best and quite possibly failed, You can see mine is not quite as obvious or cartoon as the one in the video. I unintentionally opted for realism when making my brain cakes BUT here's how you can make some yourself at home; as well as how you can win a zombie experience day for you and your friends.

Ingredients and Tools

200g self-raising flour
1 ½ tsp baking powder
1 tbsp golden caster sugar
3 large eggs
25g melted butter
200ml milk (I used oat milk for mine)
Fry-light (oil spray)
A squeeze-y bottle for dispensing (I found mine on Amazon, here)
A medium to large sized frying pan

For decorations:
I've used mixed fruit, blackberry jam to create blood and maple syrup but feel free to be as creative as you like!

Method

Pre-heat your pan on medium heat and spray lightly with oil spray.

Once you've mixed your batter, either by hand or an electric whisk (making sure it is fairly runny) , pour the liquid in to squeeze-y bottle and draw out your pattern. Make sure the darker areas are drawn first and leave them for around 30 seconds. You can check to see if your batter has browned before adding more to it.

Once your design has browned, fill in the rest of the design with batter and wait for it to cook. Flip it over to reveal your finished masterpiece.

Add toppings to your pancakes and decorate being as creative as possible.

It's that simple! Well, I say that but I am ashamed to say that I only managed to get one half decent design from my attempts at making brain pancakes so please be kind. I'm sure you can do much better so be sure to try this out and submit your own.

If you haven't yet seen Zombieland: Double Tap, I had the pleasure of watching it at a multimedia screening back in October. It sees the return of the original Zombieland cast, set ten years after they've found themselves settled in the now abandoned, White House. However, when Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) decides to go out on her own, the gang must leave the safety of their base to find her - and find some new character along the way. With plenty more Bill Murray jokes and the return of the writers from the previous film, it may not be anything new but it sure does make for an entertaining sequel.

Now, if Pancake Day fun wasn't enough zombie for you, if you head over to the Official Zombieland Facebook page, you can enter for a chance to win a zombie experience with your friends. Don't forget you can also pick up your copy of Zombieland: Double Tap on Blu-Ray and DVD from here now.

Well, that's it for another food with fun post. Will you be celebrating Pancake Day this year? Perhaps whilst watching Zombieland: Double Tap to make it all the sweeter? What are your pancake toppings? As always, I love reading your comments so please do leave me lots of lovely comments below. Huge thanks to Sony for sending me a copy of the film to enjoy in 4K and for giving me another excuse to make some pancakes. Don't forget you can check out more of my foodie reviews here.

Until next time film and foodie fans,
