After the holidays are over, you may start feeling the urge to get away for the weekend. Whether you like to go to the mountains, the seashore, the country or the city, you can find a great getaway within a short drive from Leesburg. Winter weekends may be cold outside, but you’ll be warm and cozy with your sweetheart at one of these destinations. No matter where you decide to go, get your car ready for the drive at Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram in Leesburg. Here are some suggestions for weekend getaways from Leesburg, Virginia. 

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania is a short hour and a half drive from Leesburg. It’s a nice country destination with lots to see in the area. Stay at a bed and breakfast in town or on the edge of the battlefield for a unique view. History buffs may want to take a bus tour of the battlefields, or rent an audio self guided tour. If you believe in ghosts, take a guided ghost tour. Check the snow conditions at Liberty Mountain Resort in nearby Fairfield and hit the slopes for a day of skiing. For dinner, try the Pike Restaurant and Tap House. Their menu has everything from snow crab clusters to burgers. For a more elegant setting, go to the 1863 Restaurant.  

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Don’t think that just because it’s winter that there is nothing to do at the beach. Some people may still want to dress warmly and just take a stroll on the beach. Or if you are the adventurous type, take a whale watching tour. The Virginia Aquarium is open all year, as is the Adventure Park with zip line courses. The Hampton Roads International Auto Show takes place January 12-14, where you can see the latest technology, newest innovations and the direction that the automobile industry is headed. January 27 is the date of the Coastal Virginia Wine Fest, with tastings, educational seminars, and even a grape stomping competition!  When you’ve worked up an appetite, there are plenty of seafood restaurants to pick from, as well as a Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, and Jake’s Smokehouse BBQ. 

Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

If you are yearning for a mountain weekend, Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park is where you want to be. If you have weather concerns, call (540) 999-3500 first to make sure they are open. There is an entrance fee of $7 per vehicle that is good for a week. Inclement weather can close the road, but if you are going at a time when the road is open, the winter time views are really impressive. There are more than 70 scenic viewpoints along the way so you can pull over and take photos, stretch your legs, or just take in the view. The Shenandoah National Park website has listings of places to stay and eat in the area. If the road isn’t open, go anyway to Charlottesville. You’ll be able to tour Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home. Guided tours of the house are offered daily throughout the year; outdoor gardens and plantation tours are offered daily April-October.  Ticket prices start at $21 for adults during January and February. Check Charlottesvilles’ website for more things to do in the area. 

Richmond, Virginia

If visiting a big city is more your taste, then head to Richmond. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has a permanent collection of Asian art, Fabergé Eggs, and Art Nouveau objects.  and furniture. STEINLEN: Cats is on exhibit until May 13, 2018 in the Works on Paper Focus Gallery. Admission is free. For hours and other information about VMFA click here. One of my favorite things to do while in Richmond is going to Carytown and visiting all the shops. I especially loved the Penzey Spice store and bought so much I had to mail them home to myself because I flew in from Atlanta! For a great breakfast, go to Boychik’s Deli.
