Camping Underwater with the Sharks!

Josiah my eldest, had always wanted to go on a camp. A camp we planned to send him last year didn’t work out in the end. So when I found out about Scott’s Bright Little Explorers Programme for little ones, I literally threw him onboard. It’s a camp, Underwater, with sharks! One word, amazing.

Getting back to reality, this is actually a 2 days 1 night event entitled Sleeping With the Sharks, and it’s not exactly inside the water. It was held at aquariaKLCC for kids aged 6-12 years. Too bad Jordan is too young for it, else I would have let him take a break from home too.

Scott’s Bright Little Explorers programme is actually an ongoing project which aims to stimulate children’s curiosity and support children’s development through on-ground educational activities. It has been reported that humanity has only explored less than 5% of the entire ocean to date1 and we believe that aquariaKLCC will spark the curiosity of our children to learn more about the underwater world and its inhabitants,” said Venaig Jegou, Area Marketing Director, Oral Health and Nutrition, South East Asia, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare. “In addition, the rare opportunity of staying overnight at aquariaKLCC provides a unique experience of learning about nocturnal marine life and their habits as children have the chance to literally sleep next to sharks!” Venaig said. “aquariaKLCC is proud to partner with Scott’s in their Bright Little Explorers programme and provide these children with a unique ocean experience that can inspire them to learn more about ocean conservation, education and sea ethics. We hope that through this experience, it will encourage children to take an interest in the science field, as well as marine biology.” said Daryl Foong, Head of Marketing and Sales Department ofaquariaKLCC.

Imagine sleeping while in full view of Mr Shark! Even I would love to have this experience. The children are a blessed bunch indeed.

When the parents left, the children were given a full educational programme to learn about the underwater lifestyle. Some of the activities included Arapaima feeding session, Shark Feeding session, Living Ocean Tunnel Tour, Red-bellied piranha feeding session, Oh my otter game and Asian small-clawed otter feeding show. Josiah came home with days of stories to tell me about his out of the world experience.

I think most importantly, they learned that there is another world in the sea that needs our help in conservation. They also learned how to team up with fellow humans to make this world a better place. Let’s hope and pray that all our children grew up remembering these value lessons and always work hard to ensure the health of our ecosystem including the ones living underwater.
