Kefalonia, Greece: The Town of Lixouri – Far Away from the Crowds

Tags: island

The Greek Islands are undoubtedly one of the more than famous summer holiday destinations in Europe. The most popular Island holidays are Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Kos, Corfu and Rhodos. These islands are what I call the pinnacle of mass tourism. It’s like Ibiza, St. Tropez and Malaga, the Greek way, and minus the image and status charade.

There is nothing wrong really with liking and going to these islands. We are all diffrent and there is a market for every thing. We do not have to share the same pie and I think that is a relief in itself.

Dutchman and I on the other hand prefer an island with less tourist footprint. I’d like to visit Mykonos one day but I am not in a hurry while the Dutchman sees it as a tourist party trap having been here before. Rhodos is an island we are not really keen on visiting. We are turned off with the mass packages of all-inclusive hotel resorts. We would rather go for character and charm and not some sprawling yet uninspiring and unoriginal 4-5 star resort complexes. The rest of the islands I have named we have visited in the past. Although I’d like to go back to Crete and stay in Chania – Rethymon side of the island. It won’t be this year though as we have already booked for Lefkada, and not next year as well as we are already eyeing another island!

Did I tell you that we are hardcore Greek Island holidaygoers? =)

Now speaking of Kefalonia, it is definitely an island far away from mass tourism, and we quite liked that. You can see that the island supports the tourism industry but it does not take you hostage when you are paying for your meal at the local tavernas or at the boutique shops. There are no traffic on the streets or long queues of quad bikes before a stoplight. You can easily choose a sunbed on the beach, many of which are free as long as you buy food and drinks at the bar or restaurant it belonged to.

The island simply lets you relax and breathe, and it takes you by surprise as you discover the many hidden gems it has to offer.

So if Argostoli the capital of Kefalonia is already laid back, the second largest city – Lixouri is an oasis when it comes to unhurried atmosphere. You can forget about the outside world here. The place has its own time. Now.

We liked very much the vibe of the main square—Plateia Petritsi. Instead of holidaymakers that you would expect to be hanging out on the square, you will witness local to the island Greek children play on the square. Young boys arrive in their BMX bikes and perform a showdown. The little ones run around as they chase each other and take turns climbing the enormous tree in the middle of the square. Whilst mothers while away their time chatting with other mothers in the cafes and drinking the locally celebrated drink, frappe.

From Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia, Lixouri is approximately half an hour ferry ride. You can bring your scooter or car in the ferry, and the fares are very affordable. I highly recommend going with the ferry than with the car. It is quicker, comfortable and less stressful.

The ferry summer schedule: Argostoli - Lixouri - Argostoli

Lixouri is west to Argostoli and is part of the Paliki peninsula.

Here are a few pictures of Lixouri town and its main square:

On the road back to Lixouri after an afternoon on the beach.

Lixouri slowly emerging in the distance.

A typical sight, traditional Greek fishing boats anchored on the harbour.

Cafe terraces and restaurants in the centre of town.

The main square is located right on the harbour. So you will never miss your boat back to Argostoli while dining at one of the outdoor terraces.

The huge tree in the middle of the square.

A monument on the harbour.

Young boys showing their BMX biking skills. This one is a showdown!

Twilight has dawned in Lixouri.
