Grand Opening of Whole Foods Del Mar Wednesday February 27th

Monday night, the brand new Whole Foods Store in Del Mar opened its doors for a media event and private peek for at their latest supermarket. Mr. Bear, Allie and I were lucky enough to get an invitation to this exciting event. There was music, Food and drink (wine and beer tasting, yes please!), in addition to a well-orchestrated tour of the store.

Allie enjoyed the sushi the best. She wasn’t excited about going to the grocery store at first. It didn’t take long for her to change her mind with all the wonderful foods they offered.

We arrived in time to take a store tour, while we sampled the cheeses, olives, spinach artichoke dip, crab dip, prosciutto, pot stickers, beef sliders, fresh sushi and a variety of beverages—including a wide selection of on-tap beers. Our tour guide was there to answer all our questions and explained the ideas behind the store design, which was designed to be a reflection of the beauty of San Diego itself—from the nearby ocean bluffs, to the Torrey Pines groves, from the chaparral laden hillsides, to the San Elijo Lagoons.

On of my favorite fun facts about the brand new Whole Foods in Del Mar is that they are committed to the freshest locally -sourced products, which means more than a 100 vendors in the Orange, San Diego and Los Angeles areas benefit including: Homegrown Meats, Archi’s Acres, Be Wise, Stehly, Suzies Organic Farm, Carlsbad Aquafarm, South Coast Winery and Fallbrook Winery. I love that the fresh foods are sourced locally because that means the food does not have to travel great distances before it arrives at the store, in addition to the fact that obtaining local products supports the local economy. Additionally, the Whole Foods Market Del Mar store will create approximately 150 new jobs in the local community. It’s really a win-win situation for everyone.

The interior of the store has a warm feel and mimics the unique flair that is truly Del Mar. The beautiful store features a bar and restaurant within the 30,000 square foot supermarket. They serve Happy Hour Specials daily and is sure to be a big hit during the Del Mar horse racing season this summer. They offer numerous local beers on tap and local wines as well. The Trifecta Tavern is a relaxing and casual bar/restaurant with wine and a rotating selection of over 30 craft beers on tap, along with an extensive food menu. I was already planning a monthly meet-up with some of my girlfriends as we were touring the market. What a great spot to relax after a stressful day. Bring your laptop and finish up your work (or a blog post), as the Trifecta Tavern offers free wi-fi!

If you are local to San Diego, keep your eyes open for the exciting events already planned at Whole Foods Market, Del Mar.

February 27: Grand Opening at 9am. There will be a ‘bread breaking’ ceremony at 9am and the first 300 customers will receive a free demi-baguette. Enjoy food and wine tastings throughout the day, as well as vendor demonstrations and happy hour specials. There will also be an outdoor Seafood Truckload sale from 9am-dusk including Ahi Tuna cut to order at $9.99/lb (regularly $24.99/lb).

March 6: The store will be donating five percent of the day’s net sales to Del Mar Schools Education Foundation (DMESF). The donation will support the Extended Studies Curriculum Program (ESC) that focuses on art, physical education, science, technology and music in schools.
