On November 3, Roque said in a Facebook post,
To my DDS friends: Please leave Pia Rañada alone. Let us please not throw anything at legitimate journalists. Let’s give them, particularly the critical ones, hot pandesal instead.
The statement was made after RJ Nieto of Thinking Pinoy Facebook page, allegedly incited violence against Rappler reporter, Pia Ranada. According to report, during interview at radio program ‘Karambola sa DWIZ’, Nieto urged Roque to throw a hollow block at Ranada.
However, international political analyst and social media influencer, Sass Rogando Sasot, questioned Roque’s statement to leave Ranada alone and stop throwing anything at ‘legitimate journalists.’
In a Facebook post, Sasot said:
In June 2017, Maria Ressa, CEO of Rappler, presented this in Austria. She called TP, Mocha, and I as part of a “fake news network.” Did Malacañan spox person at that time do anything to tell Mainstream Media to stop “throwing anything” at us? NOPE. The spox then was NEUTRAL.
Now, the Spox. Roque is telling us to stop throwing anyting at a Rappler journalist! REALLY? You want us Spox Roque to stand silent as your friends at Rappler do this to us? Iyan ang kinakasama ng loob ko. Pag kami ang binababoy ng mainstream media, tahimik kayo. Pero kapag sila ang na-babato you will stand up for them? Ano yan?

In a separate post, Sasot also expounds the reason why she’s furious at the ‘legitimate journalists’ Roque defended.

Eh iyong hindi ka papakinggan kapag nag-explain ka ng posisyon mo about Duterte dahil nakatatak na sa utak ng mga banyaga na ang mga supporters ni Duterte ay “paid trolls.” Sino ulit ang nagpakalat niyan dito sa ibang bansa? Ang mga bu rikat na “legitimate journalists” na pinagtatanggol ninyo Spox.
Maraming Filipino sa Ibang Bansa Ang halos araw araw ipinagtatanggol ang pangulo laban sa deliberate misinformation na ipinapakalat ng mga legitimate journalists na iyan Spox. Pero kahit kailan itong mga Filipino na ito na supporters ni Duterte, ang mga DDS, hindi inaalintana ang mga BATO AT BURAK na hinahagis sa kanila ng mga “legitimate journalists” na pinagtatanggol ninyo ngayon.
Kung galit ang mga DDS sa mga “legitimate journalists” na ito, ito ay dahil may malalim na pinaghuhugutan. Bago ninyo sila ipagtanggol, pwede ba alamin niyo muna ang pang-babalahurang dinadanas ng mga ka-DDS sa kamay ng mga “legitimate journalists” na ito.
Meanwhile, Ranada has since filed a complaint against dwIZ before the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP).
“Whether or not he meant it literally, it’s a threat. Why is a KBP-recognized radio station allowing its hosts to threaten journalists?” Ranada said on her Twitter account.
