Since we started homeschooling, we have discovered all sorts of programs we may never have stumbled upon. Many of them are in person, but I'm discovering more and more cool online programs for kids.

While I don't love my kids sitting in front of a screen all of the time, I do believe in screen time with a purpose. Kids are naturally attracted to screens in our culture, so we should utilize them in a way that contribute to development.

I think it's incredibly important for us to teach our children to use technology since it's such an integral part of our culture now. So that is how we approach technology in our home.

Minecraft is one program that has become super popular over the last several years. My girls only recently showed an interest in learning what Minecraft is all about, so we went ahead and got them a copy for my second laptop.

To help them learn to use Minecraft, we signed them up for an Afterschool Program for Minecraft through Connected Camps. If you have a Minecraft lover, you should definitely explore signing them up for Connected Camps, a unique drop-in afterschool program for Minecraft. It's designed for kids ages 8-13 years.

I love how flexible the afterschool program is. Your child can choose to attend as many labs each month that fit within their afterschool schedule. Right now, labs run Monday through Thursday from 1:15-4:45pm and Saturday from 9am-12:30pm. You can check the current schedule on the Connected Camps website.

We have checked out a few of the labs so far and it has been really fun! After just a couple of hours, my older daughter, Zoë, went from saying Minecraft was boring to giggling uncontrollably with her new online friends.

Oftentimes, I find that the “new kid” has trouble being welcomed at many afterschool programs. We had the exact opposite experience with Connected Camps.

From the moment my girls entered the Connected Camps program online, they were more than welcomed. One of the first comments I heard from the other kids was, “She's new, let's all be really nice and welcome her.” Every single kid I heard seemed to really friendly and supportive – not a hint of bullying to be heard!

In the next session is really where her interest in the program blossomed. She was participating in the Game Lab and made instant friends. Everyone showed her the ropes while they played Hide and Seek together.

When they were done playing Hide and Seek, the counselor came back into the room to see what the kids wanted to do next. One of the kids offered to help Zoë learn how to play Minecraft.

Her little buddy had so much patience walking her through all of the possibilities in Minecraft. I absolutely love listening to her explore a new interest with a new friend.

Best of all, before that experience she was not getting into Minecraft. Afterwards, she said, “I now understand why people like Minecraft so much. That was fun!” It's all about the experience – and this afterschool program for Minecraft delivered that for her.

After little sister Kaylee watched big sister have so much fun, she wanted in on the action. She picked it up super quickly as well and has been really into it ever since!

I am really impressed with how interactive the whole Connected Camps program was. They walked us through the setup and made sure all of our settings were right. Then they made sure we were in the right class room and made the introductions with the current students.

Everything seems to be really well thought out and executed from what I've seen. Connected Camps keeps the kids engaged by making sure everything is very interactive and fun. I love programs that make learning fun.

I can now see how Minecraft could lead to an interest in coding for the right kid. My girls are already asking how things like this are built. Pretty neat!

Both Zoë and Kaylee are very excited for the next Connected Camps class so they can play Minecraft with their friends! If you have a Minecraft lover, or a child who needs an interactive activity, sign them up for Connected Camps afterschool program for Minecraft. They'll love it!
