Homemade gifts can not only save you money but they can also show the person you give them to just how much you’ve thought about the gift you’re giving them. I’ve got lots of ideas for homemade gifts this Christmas but today, we’re starting with some ideas for mason jar gifts.
Mason Jars are traditionally used for preserving and canning food but I use them for all sorts in my house. In my kitchen alone I’ve used the smaller sized jars to store my homemade applesauce in and I have lots of them in my cupboard filled with everything from flour to porridge oats and I even have one filled with all of my cupcake cases on sitting on my kitchen shelf.
In my bathroom, I use them to make my homemade bath salts look pretty and to house my homemade toilet fizzers and I even have one in my bedroom windowsill that I have a candle sitting in at the moment and Miss Frugal has one in her room that she still uses for her holiday savings despite now having a bank account and debit card.
They’re not just practical storage solutions though, they’re also great to use for homemade Christmas presents as you can fill them with gifts and make some amazing personalised Mason Jar Gifts for your friends and family! Here’s a few ideas on how you can make a mason jar gift that people will love:
Homemade jams, jellies and chutneys always go down well at Christmas so if you want to get making then that’s a great place to start. Just remember to always add a label so people know what you’re giving them.
Mason Jars are perfect for giving homemade baking mixes and fun winter treats like a homemade snowman soup – just add in your hot chocolate and other ingredients layering them up in the mason jar and then attach the instructions and a cute poem along with a candy cane (or even better – a candy cane spoon) and you have a super cute present. This would be perfect for neighbours, teachers or even for you and the kids as a Christmas Eve treat.
You can even use them to make a homemade cookie gift by layering in all of your dried ingredients needed for your favourite cookie recipe and adding a card with a list of wet ingredients to add along with baking directions. Add some Christmassy ribbon and you’re done! This is a cranberry and white chocolate cookie mix that I have coming up for you in the next couple of weeks…
I like the idea of doing this with a recipe for gingerbread and tying a cute gingerbread man cutter to the jar along with your instructions.
In the past, I’ve made Miss Frugal a spa in a jar kind of mason jar gift which was basically a mason jar filled with a face mask, a bath bomb, one of those towelling hairbands, some nail varnish and some chocolates – basically everything she needed for a bit of a pamper night. They were all Christmas themed and I gave it to her on Christmas Eve to have a relaxing pamper.
As a Secret Santa gift before I’ve used a mason jar and filled it with stationery bits and bobs that I’d bought throughout the year for someone who I knew loved all things stationery and Mr Frugal has had one before filled with layers of his favourite sweets from a local sweet shop who still sell sweets by the quarter. I also use them to make my Christmas sugar scrubs.
Basically just think of what the person likes and then fill a jar with small presents that you know they’ll love to make their perfect personalised mason jar gift and if you start early enough, you can buy something small each week so you can budget easier for it!
