Inktober is starting in a few weeks, and I have been practicing my inking skills in preparation. I can’t wait to see all of the talented and creative illustrations that artists will create. It is one of my favorite parts of October. Inking has always been my favorite aspect of comic art. When selecting a book to review this week, I made sure to pick one with a lot of ink work.
Jack Grimm Issue 1 Review
Jack Grimm: Harbinger of Death is created by Gary Boyarski. The book currently had one issue which premiered on September 12th, 2018. The book is published by Dead King Comics. Jack Grimm: Harbinger of Death is a horror comedy featuring a new grim reaper learning the ropes of the job.
The Grim Reaper got caught stealing souls, and now the accountant that caught him is the new face of Death. This is a big change for the mild-mannered Jack Grimm, who is now responsible for releasing the souls of the living. On top of getting acclimated to his new job, there are people seeking revenge on behalf of the Grim Reaper.
This book is full of hilarious and witty dialogue. Jack Grimm seems to be out of his element, with comical results. Though this comic deals with heavy topics such as death and loss, the story is funny and lighthearted.
Jack Grimm: Harbinger of Death is drawn in black and white. There is a heavy emphasis on inking style, which I thought was awesome. Boyarski employs a variety of inking techniques which adds a lot of depth to the art. Great black and white comics can give the panels character in the absence of color. Boyarski hits the mark in this regard.
Boyarski excels at switching up the panels and keeping the pages interesting. Many of the panels have different borders and inking styles. There is a great panel where the narration is written around the curves of a spiral. Each page of Jack Grimm: Harbinger of Death has its own unique personality.
I thought that Jack Grimm: Harbinger of Death was a great first issue. It clearly sets up the basic plot of the story. There is an eccentric cast of characters equipped with hilarious dialogue. Jack Grimm finds himself in quite a predicament by the end of the issue. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
