Ekiti RTEAN Boss Murdered

•Police seal motor park

There was tension in some parts of Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, following the murder of Deputy Chairman of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Ado-Akure Branch, Ojo Ogunsakin, by a union member, Abednego Ajibola.
Ajibola, a unit chairman in the branch, reportedly smashed Ogunsakin’s head with a big stone on Sunday over a disagreement between the duo after which the victim was rushed to the hospital.
Ogunsakin reportedly died in the early hours of Monday as the news of his death spread round Ado Ekiti. Union members loyal to the slain RTEAN chief embarked on a violent protest round the town.
The popular Akure Motor Park along Ikere Road was closed down by the police as early as 6.00 am on the order of the Commissioner of Police, Abdullahi Chafe.
Heavily armed policemen stood guard with their vehicles on both sides of the road to ensure that nobody had access to the park.
Ajibola also known as Adeco has been arrested and detained at the Homicide Section of the State Police Command while the remains of Ogunsakin has been deposited at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).
Giving explanation on what led to the killing state RTEAN Chairman, Samuel Agbede, said Ajibola took the law into his own hand following Ogunsakin’s recommendation which led to the dissolution of the unit exco which he (Ajibola) headed.
Agbede said: “Adeco had been reported by members of his executive to the branch chairman that he was too autocratic to deal with. They also accused him of corruption. The branch EXCO had sat on this case three times where he was warned to retrace his steps and work in line with our constitution.
“Last Friday when this case was brought again for the fourth time, the branch Exco resolved that the unit Exco should be dissolved. The deceased was one of those who supported the idea to curb Adeco’s excesses.
“It was after this that he started threatening to deal with the late Ogunsakin and an argument ensued. As they were arguing, Adeco just lifted a big stone and ran after the deceased and hit him in the head and he fell immediately.
“He was first taken to Assumpta Hospital where he was referred to EKSUTH before he finally died on Sunday night”.
One of the policemen who spoke on condition of anonymity at the scene of the incident disclosed that the culprit had been taken to the police headquarters while investigation continues.
He said the motorpark will be closed down indefinitely until contrary directive comes from the Police Commissioner to prevent reprisal attack.
Police spokesman Alberto Adeyemi who confirmed the incident said the suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.
