Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, has asked students to use their social background to their advantage.
She stated that determination would help them actualise their dreams, noting that coming from a humble background was never a limitation for a serious student.
Ambode, according to a statement on Thursday, spoke while presenting university scholarships to two students, adding that hard work would earn them success in the future.
The two students, Omolola Oluwadare and Felix Afolabi, passed the scholarship interviews of Ambode’s pet project, Hope for Women in Nigeria Initiative (HOFOWEM), for the 2016/2017 academic year.
The governor’s wife disclosed that the HOFOWEM Scholarship Award was in line with HOFOWEM’s vision to give hope to underprivileged children by encouraging their educational pursuits.
She added that it was instituted to sponsor brilliant Indigent Students from Lagos State public secondary schools to pursue first degree courses in Nigeria.
She said, “You must note that coming from humble beginnings is not necessarily a limitation to what you can achieve in life. The children of rich people are not always the most brilliant or most successful. It is about how much of your time and attention you invest in your academic work.”
Expressing their joy, the beneficiaries, who study accountancy at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State and University of Lagos respectively, said the scholarships were dreams come true.
