Dog Days

Early one morning the sun was shinin’

I was laying in bed

Wondrin if she’d changed at all

If her hair was still red

“Tangled Up in Blue”, Bob Dylan

Every story has a beginning, Middle and end. I’d say we’re smack dab in the middle of the story called “The Summer of 2018”.

It’s also the first week I recall this summer with a consistent forecast of rain. Rainy midsummer days can be seen as kind of a bummer. On the other hand, I remember seeing some of the best movies ever on mid week family vacation rainy summer days. I remember seeing Return of the Jedi and Ghostbusters while it poured rain right in the middle of a week at the beach in Charlestown, Rhode Island.

Life often requires trade offs. To overgeneralize and probably inccorectly paraphrase buddhism, labeling things good or bad is a vain human attempt to assign permanence in a universe where permanence just doesn’t exist.  It’s kind of like glass half full or empty thing, except maybe buddhists would recognize that either way, the water is going to evaporate and the glass will be empty.

One of the things I like about my age is that I have a lot of great memories. It’s like having a souped up Netflix account, with an almost infinite bank of stories and characters. Not everyone gets that. So, along with the gray hair, impaired vision, lack of energy , and prostate exams, come a lot of great memories like my parents taking me to see Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and The Goonies, and having black raspberry ice cream in a sugar cone at the beach. And lots of other stuff. It’s a trade off.

The traffic has been light going to work in the morning, everyone is on vacation.  I’ve got some vacation time lined up soon with my own son.  I’m looking forward to it, but not the way I used to when I was a child.  I like my routine and I like to think I’m important and that I’m needed at work.  It gives me a much needed sense of purpose.  I’m sure we’ll have a great time, but it’s still weird that I’m the dad now, and not the kid.

This summer has flown by.  Have you ever felt like you’re always busy but have a hard time producing anything to show for it?  That’s kind of where I’ve been for a while.  Everything seems to be going ok on paper.  I’ve been doing okay at work, I’ve been spending time dadding, and I’ve gotten a lot of mountain biking in as well.  Last week I got to make it to the weekly Nemba Raw Ride and check out some new trails with friends.  I didn’t bring my Gopro camera, I didn’t have my act together enough to pack it all up.  I guess I was too busy.  With what, I don’t know.

And speaking of the Thursday night NEMBA RAW Ride, my friend Larry, a regular at the Thursday night ride, had posted a bike ride recently on Strava, which he titled “Speedball rang the night clerk, ” which after some googling,  I learned is a lyric from the 1981 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song, “Something Big”.  Man they don’t make decades like the 80s anymore. I’m glad I have those memories. And for what my memory lacks, it’s a good thing you can probably find it on YouTube.
