With Valentine’s Day coming up, we all have Love and romance on the mind. Naturally, for me this includes listening to music that makes me think of those themes. Of course, I always find myself irritated by the lack of rock n roll on most Valentine’s themed playlists, so I decided to pick 10 of my very favorite romantic tunes to share with you today. Many of these songs served as inspiration as I worked on the books in my “Instruments of Life” series, and even more were part of my wedding playlist.
This isn’t your run-of-the-mill list of soft ballads. Like anything, love has many facets and I’ve tried to represent as many of them as I could. I hope you enjoy these selections as much as I do!
Touch Too Much-AC/DC
There’s a reason this is in the number one spot on this list. While it might not be a romantic song in the traditional sense, it’s certainly one of those songs I hear and think, “I wish someone would write something like this about me.” To me it perfectly captures that all-consuming, raw passion that comes with new love. Who wouldn’t want to bottle that feeling?
New Tattoo-Motley Crue
I almost chose another Crue song, “Without You”, for this spot, but I felt this more clearly fit my own view of romance. I love the realness of this song. Who doesn’t love big, stupid displays of emotion? Especially one as permanent as getting your lover’s name or face tattooed on your body?
Sometimes, you really do need a soft, beautiful ballad. The simplicity of this song is beautiful on it’s own, to be sure, but it’s the lyrics for me that bring it home. Tender, heartfelt, they paint a picture of a love that’s incredibly pure.
Inside Your World-Godhead
This is the song my husband and I chose for our first dance at our wedding. Of course, this song had been important to us from the beginning. Honestly, it also makes me think a bit about the characters in my books as well, as it tells the story of a love that’s deep, but guarded. For me, it describes a willingness to push past those barriers and become unified and it’s a beautiful sentiment.
This I Love-Guns N Roses
I feel like I could write a novel about all the things that make this song amazing. In fact, it may have been responsible for huge chunks of my “Instruments of Life” series. That said, I think it can all be summed up by this one line: “I searched the universe and found myself within her eyes.”
Mista Bone-Great White
Okay, okay, this is definitely more lustful than romantic, but this always makes the cut for songs that make me feel amorous. With lines like “I’m gonna play you like a rhythm section”, can you blame me for including it?
The Story- Brandi Carlile
This might be the sappiest song on the list. In many ways, it’s your standard “I was made for you” song (in fact, that line is even in the song), but it’s done so masterfully that it doesn’t come off as cheesy at all. I love the message of truly sharing all of yourself and building a love that’s enduring.
Lay Your Body Down-Poison
This one has a hint of tragedy to it, which I think makes it all the more wonderful. Sometimes love is messy. Sometimes you have to be facing a possible ending to find a new beginning. This song captures that perfectly.
Until I Get You-Hanoi Rocks
Who doesn’t love that feeling when you begin to fall for someone? This is a perfect “I’ve got a crush on you” song, which I think is a stage that is often overlooked when we think of romantic songs. What I love most about this song is how much I want to believe he gets the girl in the end.
Maybe I’m Amazed-Paul McCartney
Seriously, I feel like Sir Paul just kind of plucked this song out of the ether. It just feels so heartfelt and pure that I can’t imagine it having to be “written”, just brought forth. Honestly, if this were a numbered list, this would probably be number one.
What about you? I would love to hear what songs make your list! Fill my comments with your picks for “most romantic” songs and I’ll give thiem a listen!
