Situated in the lovely grounds of Tredegar House the Site is situated a short drive in. Well manicured and planted, a dusting of Motorhomes and caravans sit amongst the daffodils. Met by the warden, a lovely lady, who informed us of the basics of the site. Pitch found, hard standing, not too keen on the surface, some of the stones are quite big and as one of our neighbours said, “If you can hammer home an awning ground peg at Tredegar, you can hammer one home anywhere”, luckily we have our steel headed club mallet as a rubber one would be useless.
The M4 hums gently in the background, not sure how I’d feel about the noise sitting out on a quiet summer’s evening as it is constant until late evening, if you pitch up down near the wardens office end of site you will reduce the impact slightly. We soon found we did not notice the ‘traffic hum’ and it never affected our sleep even with the skylight open. The facilities aren’t as modern as some of the clubs other sites but they are extremely clean and warm. Club wifi is available and phone signal is good with 4G signal. A relatively small site, there are 80 pitches, a mix of grass and hard standing, with 4 serviced pitches and one facilities block. The site has a small area for tents with its own parking area. There is no play area or park but there is a children’s park in the House grounds right outside the site entrance with endless acres of grass to run off their energy.
If parts of the previous paragraph sounded negative, it is time to apologise and flip to the positive side of the coin, because this site has much to offer and is well worth a visit. Located only two minutes from the M4 making this site perfect for a short stopover if travelling to or from West Wales, a fabulous location for dog owners as the entire Tredegar House grounds become your own private dog walk after the gates close at 6pm and the proximity to Newport, Cardiff, Brecon Beacons and the various towns and villages in the valleys. There is a lot you can do from this site, we even managed a trip into Bristol from here.
Points to add. We mention the gates to the grounds closing at 6pm – you are provided with a key to enable car entry. There is a Chippy/Curry takeaway just beyond Tredegar House that you could walk to in ten minutes, tell them you are on caravan park and ask them to tin foil the boxes to keep the heat in. Finally, be aware that Tredegar House is having a new lid (roof) fitted in 2017 and is completely covered in scaffold and sheets, it is still open but this essential work means some Wow factor is currently missing.
Overall, we like this site and wish we could have stayed longer, for us this was a ‘places to see – things to do’ site as the traffic hum does not really make it a ‘peace perfect peace’ site. Click HERE to see the places we visited.
