Why Reading Is One Of My Favorite Ways To Learn

Reading is something that many of us cannot help but do and something we do everyday often without realizing it. Whether you read the news on the way to work, enjoy a chapter or two from a novel before bed, read a menu at a restaurant, browse your favorite blogs, or flip through a magazine on your break, reading is a joy to be treasured.

But reading isn’t just about enjoying yourself or entertainment; reading is also one of the best ways to learn new things, improve your ability to concentrate and even develop your ability to communicate. It also seems that extensive reading is quite an attractive feature too. I might be biased. After all, I have an English degree and have done extensive reading since my elementary school days.

However, you can't ignore the fact that communication is one of the main distinguishing features of humans and the better we get at it, the happier and more Successful we tend to be (just ask A.J Hoge from Effortless English Club how communication saves jobs).

Successful Reading Habits

There is one thing that all successful people seem to have in Common. Whether they are TV presenters, entrepreneurs based in silicon valley or inventors determined to reach Mars, a study has shown that the one thing all of these people have in common is reading .

Reading is one of the best ways to obtain lots of knowledge fast and to discover new points of view. Unlike TV, which is passive, reading forces you to concentrate on what is happening and process the information thoroughly before you can move on.

What is interesting about the common reading habits of successful people, is that they are all using reading like this: as a way to mine new information. Rather than reading books for entertainment, they read non-fiction to grasp new ideas. Plus, it seems that the more you read, the more successful you are likely to be.

Papers, Journals, Online Content, Books…

Of course, reading books is the first thing you will think about, but there are plenty of opportunities to read and learn. Since the arrival of the internet, online content has soared with many newspapers and journals publishing online for free. Wikipedia has also helped things along by linking pages and pages of information and linking back to sources making an afternoon following a particular track all too easy to fall into.

While reading frequently is a good thing, reading a variety is just as important. Variety will bring you a wider reach of opinions and ideas to properly shape your own views. Plus, reading widely will give you a greater scope for inspiration than allowing yourself to be lead down one path.

The more you read, the more you will understand and be able to connect ideas to one another. While fiction may present you with characters who can guide you through social problems or present new ideas, non-fiction can speak to you directly and properly explain something. What we’re reading changes our perceptions.

Books can give you knowledge and the more you read the more you will have. How could anyone possibly avoid a temptation like that?
