Casper Sleep Essential Mattress Review

When shopping for a new Mattress, there’s the age-old struggle: How can you know if a bed suits your preferred sleeping position, accommodates those who sleep hot or cold, or fits your love for a firm or soft mattress? It’s not quite socially acceptable to lounge for hours around a bedding store, testing out each yourself.

To save you the time and hassle, we’ve performed all the necessary digging. With the full story, you can better decide on the right mattress for you! Today, we’re placing the Casper Sleep Essential Mattress under a microscope. Does it meet our expectations?

According to testers, it has three different levels of memory foam, is breathable, and is easy to clean. However, some testers also noted it arrived with a strong chemical odor. Is that enough to sway our good opinion? Before you make your final decision, let’s take a closer look at the Casper Sleep Essential Mattress. It may surprise you!

Material Composition

The Casper Sleep Essential Mattress comes with three different layers of memory foam. Starting from the bottom:

The first is the durable, 7.5-inch support layer, which is designed (as the name implies) to support the other two layers, as well as your body. This is the firmest type of memory foam in the bed.

The next layer is the 1.5-inch transition foam. This provides a medium-firm bridge between the foundation and the top level, so you can enjoy the support of the base layer without sacrificing comfort.

The final layer is the soft, comfort level. At two-inches thick, this has been designed to deliver plush cushion to your joints, spine, and hips, so you can enjoy a cradled experience as you sleep. As the final top layer, it’s the real contact point you’ll experience, while the others provide a secure foundation to rest on.

These layers are then encased in a polyester knit cover. This zips off for easy clean-up, should accidents or spills occur. A note about the cover – it’s a beautiful charcoal gray, which effectively hides any staining that may occur.

Casper: The Brand

Founded in 2014 by Philip Kim, Neil Parikh, T. Luke Sherwin, Jeff Chapin, Gabe Flateman, and John Anthony Gillis, Casper began as strictly a mattress company. The business gained funding through Kickstarter and then went on to gain investors for the creation of their first mattress.

The company has since unveiled new pillows, as well as dog beds, bed frames, and even reading lights.

Stand-Out Features:

Free Shipping: A great money-saver, especially when purchasing larger items online. Casper offers free shipping and free returns.

Warranty and Returns: Speaking of free returns, there’s a great warranty and return policy on this mattress. Casper gives you 100 nights to make up your mind about the mattress, and then pays for return shipping if you decide you want to send it back.

Dark Color: The Casper mattress is encased in a dark charcoal gray fabric, which looks sharp and effectively hides any staining that comes with normal wear and tear. Remember that weird yellowing that occurs over time as mattresses are used? That’s a thing of the past with the deep gray Casper mattress cover. Of course, we advise using sheets and blankets for maximum comfort, not just a bare mattress!

The Positives

Comfortable

Multiple testers loved the comfortable design of the Casper Sleep Essential Mattress. With the softness and bounce of the two-inch top layer, and the pressure relief in the 1.5-inch transition layer, it’s not difficult to see why. The foam is gentle enough to cradle and conform to your body, while the base levels provide stability to keep you from sinking. The soft polyester knit also contributes to a plusher sleep experience.

Supportive

This Casper mattress isn’t just comfortable – it’s also supportive. With the durable 7.5-inch base layer and the pressure-relieving transition layer, your back, neck, hips, shoulders, and legs are all supported. This helps prevent and relieve aches or pains, so you can wake up refreshed. In addition to the support, the mattress helps to isolate and deaden any movement – allowing one person to roll around a bit without disturbing a bed-sharing partner. A mattress that creates a supportive, quiet, and still sleeping environment is important in our book!

Easy to Clean

This mattress is also unbelievably easy to clean. Since it has a zip-off cover, you need only remove and toss it in the washing machine, or spot clean if you prefer. For durability purposes, it’s recommended to lay flat to dry or hang it on your clothes line. After that, simply zip it back onto your mattress and settle down for the night.

Easy to Set Up

The Casper Sleep Essential Mattress is extremely easy to set up. It arrives tightly packed, which makes it much easier to maneuver into your house or apartment. Everyone who has tried to carry a standard mattress up a staircase or around corners will know that having the mattress packed down small makes a big difference. The Casper arrives wrapped in plastic and boxed up, so all you have to do is carry the box (about 76 pounds) into the room where you’re putting this mattress and open the box and the plastic wrapping. It will expand itself to its full size – sometimes these mattresses expand in just a few hours! For extra ease, we recommend putting the mattress directly on the bed frame and letting it expand right where it will stay.

Breathable

Testers also noted that this Casper mattress is very breathable. As such, there’s no worry of it growing overly hot or picking up odors from your home. This is mainly due to the top comfort layer, which has channels running through its design. Air can move throughout the foam to help it stay cool and dissipate odors. Memory foam normally runs very hot, but with this build, that’s no longer a concern. Sleeping is cool and comfortable, which is unusual and highly sought after in a memory foam mattress.

Good for All Sleep Positions

Multiple testers also raved about this mattress accommodating numerous sleeping positions. It’s firm enough for back and stomach sleepers to receive the spine and neck support they need, but it’s soft enough for side sleepers, conforming to the curves of their body and supporting their side, back, neck, and shoulders. It doesn’t matter how you sleep or if you tend to change positions; this mattress will adapt to your needs. This mattress is also noted to help relieve pressure on any particular body part, which is helpful if you have any injuries or chronic aches and pains.

The Negatives

Not for Heavier Individuals

Quite a few testers mentioned that, if you’re a heavier person or on the taller side, this may not be the bed for you. While it’s supportive, it does lean more to the soft side. Someone larger may sink too much, failing to enjoy the same comfort and support a smaller, more petite person would. It’s unfortunate, but definitely something to consider ahead of time.

Too Soft

A couple of testers also felt the mattress was too soft for them. This can be an issue when buying mattresses or bedding of any kind. Too soft and too firm are subjective opinions that vary from person to person. One buyer’s soft could be another person’s firm.

With that said, this is definitely more on the medium-soft to soft end of the spectrum. If that’s what you prefer, this is the mattress for you.

Odor

As with all memory foam beds – especially those which arrive in a box at your door – this Casper does come with a slight chemical odor. After you unwrap and lay it out, that smell should dissipate within 24 to 48 hours. However, if you’re especially sensitive to smells, you may want to leave the mattress in another room while it airs out. Once it’s finished, you can move it into your bedroom.

Edge Support Issues

Because this mattress struggles to accommodate greater weights, unfortunately, the edge support suffers as well. If you’re a tall or heavier individual, getting in and out of this bed may be difficult.

If you roll to get out of bed, you may reach the edge and then find it dipping suddenly, leaving you to tumble out. Likewise, sitting on the edge to put on your shoes is not something we recommend with this mattress. You’ll most likely slip off. For some people, this may be an acceptable trade-off for the plush nature of the bed.

Overall Verdict

After looking over all the positives and negatives, we do recommend the Casper Sleep Essential Mattress. It features three different layers of memory foam, each providing different levels of support, and with a breathable design. It also includes a removable and easy-to-clean cover, making this a high-quality mattress.

Unfortunately, this Casper mattress does struggle to accommodate heavier individuals and may be unsatisfying to those who prefer a firmer bed. Nonetheless, if you’re on the petite to average side, don’t have problems with odors, and prefer to sleep on a softer mattress, you should find this bed serving you well.
