I told ya that story to git to this 'un:

Not long after we moved in we had the family over to celebrate. As was her custom, my Mom showed up 45 minutes early and acted like we should, you know, stop preparations and visit and when that didn't happen she got visibly agitated when we continued on while we chatted with her. Anyhow ....

A few minutes before actual arrival time Mom got up and walked off even as she completely ignored Sensible, who wanted a Grandma hug. We didn't see Mom again until sometimes after everyone else arrived when she proceeded to tell me that she had picked out her bedroom ..... but first we'd have to remove the furnace and hot water heater and install electric heat and hot water, remove the wood stove, renovate her bedroom, and install a garage.

Yep, that was our welcome. I pulled her aside and made it clear that wasn't happening to which she said I'd promised so the choice wasn't mine ... and besides, she'd given us a $1000 house buying gift so the house was already part hers!! So if she couldn't move in, she'd just build something in our side yard but we'd STILL have to adapt our house so she didn't have to live 'in the shadow of a toxic house'.Yeah, that's my Mom ......

She left after I set her straight again but that wouldn't be the end. Several times over the years she tried to move in and it made me rethink my original promise which was simply that if we ever had enough land to split off we'd give her a small lot to build a new house for herself. Which came back to haunt me later when ....

.... we found a sweet 99 acre level lot on top of a hill with an open field, some woods, and even a stream. Beautiful, scenic, felt isolated but only minutes from town. So we started making plans for ourselves while we set up to buy a piece of heaven. i was gonna wait until we got it, then go to Mom but Queenie convinced me to talk with Mom first, then go after the property. Mom was all happy at first but not without trying again to insist on dictating how we would build our home to her specs. Then she found out that there was a minor power line trunk that was in view (but not across the property) and absolutely freaked out. See, to this day she is insanely convinced that the power lines near Grandpas farm were kept clear with Agent Orange 'and some stuff even worse than that' and that was what caused my Father's melanoma. (actually, at that point Mom was still lying and saying Dad died of lung cancer to try and scare us into never smoking. But that's another story for another day...).

So I finally had more than enough and told Mom that the promise was broken, but on her end. Since she couldn't be trusted to act fairly with the gift we were attempting to give her, the gift would not be given.

Going through all of that delayed things just enough that someone else grabbed that lot so we missed out. Our fault but Mom didn't help ..... and we've been in this same house ever since. Life intervened to ensure we'd be too busy to worry about a move so here we are. And happily so.
