Happy Valentines to all!

(OK, this is gonna come down like I'm bad-mouthing the day. Don't believe the hype, it's a great day with an awful execution and even Worse expectation.)

If there was any crock of a created day, it's Valentines. Oh, the premise and the day itself are terrific sentiments. The problem is, whoever put it on the calendar failed to first pass a law making it a capital offense to advertise, commercialize, marginalize, and co-opt the meaning. And the significance. And the universality that it should be.

We're hammered with Jared and Kay and Gertrude and Godiva. Pummeled by FTD and Hallmark and Sherrie's and Calvin Klein. And crushed under Victoria and Fridays and Lexus and Outback. And Fredericks. All in an effort to shame, cajole, and pressure us into separating from our wallets for a month or more .....

And I find that offensive. Not that I didn't play the game for a time. Having someone can do that to you, particularly when you don't want to misstep and risk that one someone. It's expensive, it's senseless and worse yet, ineffective in supporting the real. And it's cruel to those who don't have or no longer have that special someone.

It took us many years to genuinely figure it out, that we could manage without the junk. It happened actually not long after our second daughter came when circumstances co-opted the co-opting of the day.

And so now for us, the day means what it's supposed to. Oh, we usually do something for each other beyond the norm but nothing big, financially challenging, or overly complicated. Just what we want, none of what we don't.

(And sometimes what I want :)

Won't you be, will you be, wouldn't you be ... my Valentine!!!
