No.8: "The Girl" - Charlotte Perrelli
"The Girl" is the only one of Charlotte's three Melodifestivalen songs not to win and go to Eurovision and to add insult to schlager injury it was knocked out in its heat so that some boring tuneless woman with a guitar and bed sheets could take its place in the final. This ruined the whole of Melodifestivalen 2012 for the Schlagerboys!

Charlotte Perelli is a total Eurovision schlager legend! Winning in 1999, not wining in 2008 and then not even getting to the contest in 2012, but giving us pure schlager with every turn. You wouldn't get Charlotte singing a boring ballad and pretending to cry at the end; Charlotte has more schlager class!

"The Girl" is classic Sir Fredrik of Kempe schlager pop. This was Sir Fredrik in his 70's disco fabulousness phase; he paid tribute to Boney M with "Rasputin" hand claps for Eric Saade in 2011 and for "The Girl", he appeared to reference the plinky plonky intro to ABBA's "Mamma Mia". Amazing!

For her Melodifestivalen performance, Charlotte used a back screen projector, which was clearly nicked by Måns Zelmerlöw who used it to win Eurovision three years later. Charlotte was first, thank you very much; Måns owes his victory to her! On the night, having got half way through the song, Charlotte was so overcome with the sheer fabulousness of the first chorus that she forgot the words to the second verse. We don't blame her; how can anyone concentrate following a chorus as amazing as that one? The Schlagerboys are always forgetting lyrics when we get over excited. Best thing to do is just mumble, look fabulous and carry on, which is exactly what she did. Schlager pro!

The key change is astonishing and includes the signature Sir Fredrik clunky bit. Charlotte struts around and gives it her all and by the time we get to the fab finger-pointy end of the song, frankly we're exhausted!

As "The Girl" inexplicably failed to get to the final, it got only one performance which gives it legendary schlager status. Douze points to Charlotte from the Schlagerboys! Loreen may have won Eurovision that year but we would far rather have had this from Sweden! Schlagertastic!
