Schlagertastic 50: Number 5!!

No.5: "Idag Och Imorgon" - Kikki Danielsson
Kikki Danielsson is a total schlager legend! She's was in Eurovision twice for Sweden in the 1980s with fab schlager anthems and has entered Melodifestivalen about 48 times over the years. 2006 was the last time we saw her in the contest and what an amazing song to bow out on!

The Schlagerboys loved "Idag Och Imorgon" as soon as we heard the "Bong Bongs" that heralded the opening bars. OMG! What an introduction! You know within the first 9 seconds, before Kikki even opens her mouth to sing the first line, that this song is going to to be completely schlagertastic. Sure enough by the time we get to the first chorus we're home. The song never slows down and the key change soars; the whole thing is utterly amazing!

For her performance, Kikki wore a pink tent and stood still for the first verse and chorus before being helped down a couple of steps and across the stage by three boy dancers with floppy schlager hair, who basically prowled around her for the rest of the song. It's a simple but effective schlager delivery; Kikki doesn't need gimmicks to command her stage!
The Schlagerboys first met Kikki in the summer of 2005 when we went to a schlager disco during Stockholm Pride week and she was in attendance. She walked past us and we just about dropped out drinks in shock before running after her and asking for a photo. In 2006 the day of the final she was doing a CD signing in the Globen shopping centre with Björn Kjellman (who?) and we queued up with a load of 10 year old girls to get a Kikki autograph and photo. We told Kikki she was going to win that night and she raised her eyes; we all knew this was complete rubbish.

We once travelled all the way to Gothenburg for a weekend to see a CHIPS reunion at the Scandinavium. Once we booked everything, Lasse Holm dropped out, and then a few weeks later so did Elizabeth Andreasson so we ended up going all that way for a Kikki Danielsson concert, but she was still fab.

Kikki invented "Doing A Kikki" at Melodifestivalen which is schlager-speak for getting to the final with a schlagertastic anthem and then coming last. Anna Book 'did a Kikki' in 2007, Christer Sjögren 'did a Kikki' in 2008 and the trend continued in 2015 when Magnus Carlsson 'did a Kikki'. Anna Book will probably 'do a Kikki' again this year. All the best songs come 9th or 10th in the Melodifestivalen final; it's just the way of the schlager world!

"Idag Och Imorgon" is another Lord Thomas of G:son composition which means he wrote the songs placed at No.9, No.8, No.7, No.6 and No.5 in the Schlagertastic 50. The man is a genius. There really should be some sort of schlager medal awarded.

God bless Kikki Danielsson! Kikki has never betrayed her schlager roots and for that we love her. She has schlager icon status!
