OMG!! Austria made the right choice last night, despite the jury doing their best to scupper Zoe's chances! The jury gave their points after each performance and they seemed to diss Zoe and her fabulous moving catwalk and wind-machine. At the end of the judge's voting Zoe was in joint 4th place with 7 points out of 10.
Julie Frost, one of the writers of "Satellite", kept going on about lyrical content after each song and how it was important that the words of the song were meaningful. When Zoe had performed she even said it would be sad to see Austria represented by a song in French. This was all a bit confusing, given that every other song in the Austrian final was in English. And if she felt that native language was so important, why didn't she write meaningful German lyrics for Lena? (sample meaningful lyric by Julie Frost: "I bought new underwear they're blue and I wore'em just the other day")
The judges were doing their best to be all trendy, even Conchita. They liked a shouty girl with a shadow backdrop and some woman dressed like a zombie screaming at us tunelessly. Thank goodness that the Austrian televoting public saw through all the trendiness and voted for a song with a tune and a chorus and a schlager treadmill.
Oh, and Conchita darling.... What on earth have you done with your 2012 classic "That's What I Am"? What did you do with the cheesy disco beat? We still think you're fabulous but ditch the live band and guitar solos and get back to the gay-hands-in-the-air dance remixes please!
