Introducing… Beams

Psych-folk is a genre I’ve been falling in love with over the years and Beams is the latest fine discovery I’ve made in the genre. The Toronto based sextet has been around since 2011. They are gearing up for their new album ‘Ego Death’, which is due out on the 26th of March. To celebrate, they’ve released the second single ‘A Flower Blossomed’ which is out now. The track features swirling guitars, beautiful vocal layers and a delicate balance of grit and beauty. Also, I love a vibraphone and that 70’s rock throwback in there too. I think fans of Tunng and Cat Stevens will get a huge amount out of Beams.

‘Ego Death’ is a bit of a shift for Beams as it sees them moving from banjo to guitar and ‘rocking it up’ a bit more. The album itself is a song cycle about the heroes journey. Band member Anna says that after breaking off her first engagement with fellow member Mike, she went to get some therapy in the aftermath to solve childhood related trust issues. She identified with the heroes journey during this period and that’s where the spark of the album came from. Enjoy the new single ‘A Flower Blossomed’ below.
