Another edition of the biggest award scheme in Ghana; Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) has been witnessed. Just as always, not everybody’s expectations were met and people went home either angry, sad or happy. It has become a tradition which will be experienced each year. Next year, we are all going to be anxious to know who wins what and make new predictions knowing we can be disappointed…
The stage setup wasn’t extra-ordinary, but looks good and the the background screens and stage lighting systems were adorable. Official Dj for this year is the untouchable DJ Black!! He is poised at giving life to the event and definitely knows what to play next!
Some honorary awards we given out with presentation assistance by Obour ( MUSIGA President ) Who ended up performing an old classic with the legend, AB Crentsil. We Saw performances from EL, Stonebwoy, Kofi Kinaata, Adomaa, Efya, Sarkodie, R2Bees, Wizkid, Bisa Kdei and few others. My favorites were Stonebwoy, Bisa Kdei and Omar Sterling.
The previous artist of the year; Stonebwoy, took 2 awards being “Dancehall song of the year” and “Dancehall artist of the year”. EL was the man of the night; bagging 5 awards including the ultimate award, “Artist of The Year“. Kofi Kinaata grabbed “Song writer of the year” and “Best New Artist of the Year”. Bisa Kdei and Sarkodie also grabbed multiple awards…
There were few “Eye-brow-raising” moments… One was when Bisa Kdei said something like “When we mention pioneers in Highlife music, my name is included” and came back again to rephrase the same sentence by taking the “Pioneer” word out… Another moment was when EL said “Pae Dae You Are An Amazing Rapper…” and choked on the rest of his sentences… Sarkodie‘s performance was a bit dull even though the songs he performed required that kind of mode. His outfit did not tally with what he performed (My Opinion)
Things I’m not happy about are just a few… I was hoping “Crusade” by Donzy and Kofi Kinaata could win “Best Collaboration Of The Year”, Pae Dae could win “Hip Hop Song Of The year”, Flowking Stone to win “Best Rapper of the Year”, and Afriyie Wutah or Akwoboah for “Best Male Vocalist”… Well, probably they did not get enough public votes? That could be the only reason why they cant win those awards. We know they are the right people for those wards.
