“July” is a shimmering new track from Volunteer Cheerleader, the duo of recently reconnected grade school friends originally from suburban Ohio, though now living in NYC the past few years. Previously featured “The City Is A Bone” emphasized hook-y power-pop, one filled with warm synth lines and vocal harmonies, in addition to fun guitar tones that reminded of The Psychedelic Furs. Their newest track, “July” is thematically about growing out of your hometown, leaving behind the feeling of calling a place home. It’s a theme many can relate to, especially those shifting from the suburbs to a more city setting. Again, they produce a sort of timeless rock feel, one that’s comparable to Wild Nothing in its blending of shimmering post-punk ’80s influences with a contemporaneous pop charm.
