Today’s song is by “Tonight You Belong to Me” by Sluka. The San Diego, California singer, songwriter, musician, and performer Christopher Sluka is back with another single.

This is a new take on the 1926 song written by lyricist Billy Rose and composer Lee David. It has been covered over 20 times in the media and there a ton of covers more made since its release date in the early 20th century.

The song is about a last affair with an old lover though it also is thought to be depicting a dream which will vanish when they wake. It is not essentially clear but the music is so soothing it doesn’t matter what they are singing about.

The version by Sluka puts a dark and exciting spin on this light classic. It starts out with the usual Islands sounds of ukelele strumming paired with brass horns. This ethereal light feel doesn’t last long. Towards the middle of the track, the theme of possession and subjugation are magnified. You can hear at the end of the track as he goes off the rails. His wanting is magnified and as depicted in the music video that accompanies the track.
