Believe it or not, President Obama gets nervous before speeches just like the rest of us. Right before giving one of the last big speeches of his presidency, he needed something to get him focused and ready to speak in front of a packed crowd and a massive television audience. So what’s his go to song? “Lose Yourself.”
Eminem’s track that perfectly distills the nerves and jitters that go through your body before performing something monumental is the most appropriate soundtrack one could use for the occasion. It’s also another moment of President Obama not hiding his love for hip hop and showing the genre in a positive light. Only a hip hop head would think to play any Eminem related song before he steps on a stage to pass the baton to his successor.
This goes beyond Bill Clinton playing the saxophone on The Arsenio Hall Show, and even beyond Obama’s own Al Green rendition as the dopest thing a president has ever done. It’s not even a full thing. It’s really just him getting a mean head nod on for about 2 seconds and then played on a loop throughout the short video, but there’s still something heartwarming to know that the man who holds the highest land in the office does the same thing I do whenever I hear “Lose Yourself.”
But why should we be surprised? This is the same guy who has Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar on the guest list for his birthday party. Plus, the speech was a home run, so I’d say B Rabbit’s alter ago did the job.
