For years, Kanye West and Drake have circled each other as two of the biggest acts in music. They’ve been friends, enemies, frenemies and everything in between and now they might be collaborators on a mixtape together. It’s been rumored before and Drizzy confirmed that yes, he and Kanye toyed with the idea of recording a project together. Even though it still hasn’t come to fruition it’s still a possibility for the future.
“We had plans,” Drake said during his interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 radio. “We were supposed to do a mixtape together or an Album together. Maybe we’ll get that done.”
That mirrors Kanye’s statement on the subject in an interview with The Breakfast Club back in February of 2015. “The ‘Wolves’ song came from a conversation that me and Drake had, when was gonna do an album together, and the album was called Wolves,” he explained. “We said we was gonna do it. He was sending beats back and forth.”
Drake was very complimentary with his words about ‘Ye. The two are neighbors in Los Angeles and their proximity creates a situation where they’re able to share. “We’ll just sit and collaborate. We have a few things…You never know, he’ll call me tonight and say, ‘I’m putting these two songs out tonight.’ He’s one of my favorite people period, in the world. I love ‘Ye. He’s a really good guy. I grew up with him as a role model. Always given him credit that’s why we’re here right now. It’s amazing to be his friend… We can link each other and discuss anything. Feeling a way on this or just leisure talk, we have a great relationship. I hope we get more music out.”
It’s an interesting tidbit and who knows if the album can actually get done. Drizzy and Yeezy are at opposite ends of the Tidal/Apple Music divide and there may be other business dealings that prevent a full-blown partnership. Plus, their latest collaboration “Pop Style” came out lukewarm, so much so that Drake ended up putting a solo version on Views. “I just ended up going with my version of the song.”
So yeah, maybe Drake was just jabbering on knowing it won’t happen, but for a guy as calculated with his words and his moves as the 6 God you can’t completely write off the idea.
