REVIEW | Nina Nesbitt reaches new pop heights with sophomore album ‘The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change’

The singer-songwriter’s long-awaited second album takes inspiration from 90s R&B and Swedish pop.

Nesbitt’s new musical direction has already found fans in Taylor Swift and Chloe Grace Moretz.

It’s been half a decade since Scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt released an album. Her debut, ‘Peroxide’, presented us with a cute, lyrically-talented folk-pop artist and was rewarded with a number 1 spot in the Scottish album charts. Since then, Nina has been dropped by a label, signed to another and questioned her ability of being an artist. But within that time, Nina has also transformed into a witty, experienced songwriter, unafraid to take on the world with her razor-sharp words and frank observations.

Her latest LP, ‘The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change’, sees Nina change her musical direction to something more R&B/pop led. Writing from a deep personal place, the album’s honesty is refreshingly sincere and invites us to play a part in her maturing journey.

Watch ‘Colder’ by Nina Nesbitt:

Relationships are a key theme throughout the album, whether it’s singing about young kids fearlessly falling in love unaware of the pain heartbreak causes on fan-favourite ‘Colder’, or telling us to ditch the boys who mess us about on 90s R&B inspired ‘Loyal To Me’ – you’re dating but not ‘dating‘? Dump him.

While the impressive ballads like ‘Best You Had’, a track which caught the ears of Taylor Swift, and multi-layered ‘The Moments I’m Missing’ are key tracks on the album, it’s the non-single tracks like ‘Love Letter’, ‘Last December’ and the empowering ‘Empire’ that are the added gems which complete the formation of this songwriter’s newly gifted pop crown.

‘The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change’ is a pop record that contains the heart and soul of a songwriter who, despite a few knockbacks, has taken a stand and been determined to create her best work yet. And that she has succeed in.
