February’s best releases Via Reddit | new music discovery

Welcome back to the latest in our Via Reddit series. With the year now in full swing there seems to be lots of releases out there in just about every genre. Every month we scour reddit to find the best ‘via reddit’ releases.

Using Reddit to find Music is easy: just search for the genre that you love and you will probably find a sub-reddit for the sort of music you crave. The more obscure, the better!

Some communities are more active than others, some post a lot but never comment and some are the other way round. It’s just reddit. Here are the best music releases on reddit this month.

r/lofi

This is a really active sub with posts ranging from hip hop to scuzzy garage rock, although it all has a summery lo-fi edge. Here’s our faves:

Povalishin Division – ‘Бивис и Баттхед, Батхёрт и Брокенхарт’

The first release this month is some amazing Russian lo-fi indie. The production and songwriting is all tip top the only barrier being the language one.

Skating – ‘Ultra Blue’

A whole album of really interesting sounds. It’s not as energetic as you would first think but really gets you into a trance.

HeckLouis – ‘Coffee Shop’

This track perhaps has too much distortion which squashes the mix up but it definatly get the vibe that it is going for and it sounds great.

r/indie

A great sub focused on indie music that has a great mix of old and new.

Giga Herbs – ‘Bean’

Giga Herbs have written a really fun song and have an even more fun video. This garage rock is trippy and the synth work on top of the normal guitar band sound is great.

Melancolony – ‘Daydreaming Monday’

Starting with dissonant weird chords the main melody of ‘Daydreaming Monday’ soon comes through especially with the backwards style synth arp, and the chorus vocals have a really nice hook.

r/bandcamp

This sub is full of people posting about their Bandcamp releases.

Coma Zone – ‘Coma Zone’

Coma Zone have built some beautiful soundscapes that you can get lost in, with Nostalgia inducing and 80s inspired sounds.

r/ListenToThis

This is a huge sub and is always full up with fresh music of every genre, though not all of it new.

Superglu – ‘Rounder’

PICK OF THE MONTH: Fun indie rock that you can dance and sing to. There is something very Los Campesinos about them.

Voltrexx – ‘Lavender Hills’

This is very downtempo and super chilled but with some dnb and dubstep influences.

Coast Modern – ‘Animals’

An all-round amalgamation of all your favourite indie sounds, Coast Modern have written the perfect soundtrack to sunshine filled rose tinted video. File next to WU LYF, Theme Park and just smile when listening.

Some of reddit’s shared music is way down the food chain: a band’s first EP, or even first track they have ever uploaded online; some of it is from bigger bands, but there’s an astounding amount of quality music to be found on reddit. No marketing nonsense, just what sounds good and is worth sharing further.

See you next month for more of the same – find NEN on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so you don’t miss it.
