August’s 2016’s best releases Via Reddit | new music discovery

This August’s Via Reddit has unsurprisingly has brought lots of summery indie songs, which as we hang on the last rays of sunshine, is a welcome commodity. As usual we have spent the month scouring reddit to find the best ‘via reddit’ releases.

Using Reddit to find music is easy: just search for the genre that you love and you will probably find a sub-reddit for the sort of music you crave. The more obscure, the better!

Some communities are more active than others, some post a lot but never comment and some are the other way round. It’s just Reddit. Here are the best Music releases on reddit this month.

This is a really active sub with posts ranging from hip-hop to scuzzy garage rock, although it all has a summery lo-fi edge. Here’s our faves:

Smith+Robot – ‘White’

PICK OF THE MONTH: All of the songs here have really captured the My Bloody Valentine brand of shoegaze and it’s incredibly hypnotic. The guitar tone is so rich and fuzzy and the string bending is enchanting.

Bending Waves – ‘I’m In Love With Mary Jane’

Breakbeat fun from Bending Waves, but it doesn’t stop there. With its grooving bassline and just all-round crunchiness it is laid back and fun – and a free download!

JakesSadLife – ‘Socialization’

Using thoughtful speech samples is cliche and overdone but here JakesSadLife uses it really well over some ambient lo-fi beats.

A great sub focused on indie music that has a great mix of old and new.

Life Lessons – ‘Sleep It Off’

It’s not hard to guess the bands that this band listened to growing up but more about their song. Hyper-aggressive and intense bursts of energy are spread out across the song with any chance for a fill taken, whatever the instrument.

Wisconsin – ‘Wisconsin’

A slow chugging song that wouldn’t feel out of place in the slow dance scene in Back to the Future, it feels old but in a refreshing way.

This sub is full of people posting about their Bandcamp releases.

Funeral Casket – ‘Dirty Corpses’

Electro yay, fans of Daft Punk and/or Justice will love this glitched up track from Funeral Casket. The stuttering glitches at first seemingly get in the way but they are actually help the track build up and drop in a more interesting way.

This is a huge sub and is always full up with fresh music of every genre, though not all of it new.

Bloods – ‘Bring My Walls Down’

Lo-fi indie punks Bloods have got a stormer of a tune here. The call and response chorus is beautifully crafted and it makes for a great singalong anthem.

Fait – ‘Reverie’

The arpeggiated bell sound lead of ‘Reverie’ immediately grabs your ears attention and shoegazey soundscape behind is a great setting for this feel-good track.

Captions. – ‘Bearfights’

‘Bearfights’ is understated but with an underlying energy and emotion that is waiting to be unleashed. Its clever use of dynamics allows it to rise and fall within without ever going to far.

Some of reddit’s shared music is way down the food chain: a band’s debut EP, or even the first track they have ever uploaded online; some of it is from larger acts, but there’s an astounding amount of quality music to be found on reddit. No marketing nonsense, just what sounds good and is worth sharing further.

If you pick up a free download, don’t forget to share it and tell the band what you think.

See you next month for more of the same – find NEN on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so you don’t miss it.
