GALVESTON BAY, Texas — The popular Gulf Coast communities of Kemah and Seabook will turn into a music mecca this fall when the inaugural Galveston Bay Songwriters Festival takes place Sept. 28 through Oct. 1. The four-day event will feature numerous free songwriter-in-the-round sessions at various sites, plus ticketed shows featuring nationally known headliners David Lee Murphy and Radney Foster on Saturday, Sept. 30 and Sunday, Oct. 1, respectively.
The event kicks off at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, with a tribute to iconic Texas-born songwriter Guy Clark featuring Grammy-winning album producer and writer Tamara Saviano, author of Without Getting Killed or Caught: The Life and Music of Guy Clark, plus various artists, at the Kemah Community Center, 800 Harris Ave.
Texas native Foster, whose hits include “Nobody Wins” and “Just Call Me Lonesome,” will perform at 7 p.m. in the Kemah City parking lot, 604 Bradford Ave.; Murphy, whose top 10 songs include “Dust on the Bottle,” “Every Time I Get Around You” and “Loco,” will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the same location. Tickets are $35 for reserved seats and $20 for general admission and will be available starting April 8 at galvestonbaysongwriters.com. A portion of the festival’s proceeds will benefit Angels in Tropical Shirts, which raises funds for cancer support and research organizations.
“We’re excited to launch this project and offer a really unique experience,” says founder Jon Burns, who has produced the Pirates & Poets Songwriter Invitational in Port Aransas, Texas, for seven years. “The Galveston Bay Area has never had an event like this, where original music is placed front and center. We think the festival will attract music fans from across the country, who will not only experience great music, but gain exposure to our many attractions, including Space Center Houston, the Kemah Boardwalk and Galveston Island.”
Songwriters performing Americana, folk, country, roots rock and other genres are now being selected for the festival and will be announced soon. For updates check:
